New 300mm f/4 plus 1.4 TC on D600

I was a little worried about getting this combo but after using it all day without a tripod

Thistle

I love it.   This was shot at ISO 1250 and shutter speed about 1/2500. The AF worked fine.

I carried the camera holding the tripod collar base  all day and it was very secure. I don't know why I keep reading about how poorly they fit.

Lovely shot, well done. I have used this combination a lot on my D800E and it works very well indeed.

Use the tripod collar on a tripod.  Once you have it tightened up a bit, press on the lens.  Does it move?  Move quite a bit?  That's where a tripod collar is supposed to be rock-solid, and that's where the 300F4 and 80-400 (both versions) don't satisfy.

I heard about it, most people buy another collar for this lens.

They work fine with the collars from Really Right Stuff. I agree the Nikon collars are rubbish.

I agree with the other posters, the problems with the Nikon collar becomes more apparent when mounted to a monopod or tripod. The biggest advantage for me of the replacement collars (I use Kirk but RRS is equally good) is the dovetail arca swiss mount that keeps the collar tight to the ballhead. The screw mount that the Nikon provides loosens too much when moving around with the ballhead and constantly needs to be tightened. If you are using a monopod and holding the pole instead of the camera body when not in use the Nikon mount will tend to want to spin with screw threads (and potentially fall off) while the arca swiss mount stays rock solid. The replacement collars also have safety stops which make it much less likely for your lens to fall off the mount.

Personally, I wish Nikon always just had the collar as an add on option (like they do with the 70-200 f/4) and knocked $100 or so off the price of the lens. Or they could just provide real machined aluminum collars with arca swiss mounts and save us the trouble.

I must have a defective lens collar.  I'm standing here playing with my 300mm f/4 mounted on a Manfrotto ball head and it is a  tight fit. No movement . no wiggle. Maybe I've got it on backwards or upside down and don't know it yet.

If it meets your need, that's all that matters, no need to spend more unless you know it will provide a benefit to you.

No doubt it is a tight fit.  Now focus on something close in LiveView and walk back and forth behind your camera.  It doesn't take much does it...and I have a RRS collar on mine.
