Nudity in Photo Challenges? Pro or Con?

I participate in Panachallenge.com photo challenges. The current one has an entry that has stirred some behind the scene comments. The comments on the site have been positive, but I would like some other opinions as to 1) whether it is an appropriate photo for the challenge? and 2) whether nudity should be allowed?

Your comments either way are appreciated. I would post the photo here, but am not sure if it would get me in trouble. So here is a link the photo.

totally no issue for me

We see why there is nudity - it serves a legitimate purpose of expressing what the artist's idea is about and how it works.  Nothing gratuitous or too graphic.

My complaint of the photo is that red stool between the woman's legs.  Also, the photo would have been more effective, in my opinion, if the kid were peeking around a corner than covering his eyes -- doesn't seem realistic, and thus makes it look like the staged shot that it is rather than a candid.

I took it that the boy belonged to one of the two women, and had been told to cover his eyes.

In my opinion, that photo stinks.  It doesn't have any artistic value and I don't like it at all.  However, unless the challenge specifically prohibits nudes, then I guess there is nothing wrong with posting a nude (within certain limits).

Good grief, why do people get offended by a naked human body?

And if you do, turn the oher way. peole should be free to dress or be undressed as they like.

Personally speaking - no problem at all.

But greater discretion is needed for global appeal, especially in competitions. In a nudist camp you'll have people running off to find some paint to try it out. But elsewhere you will be causing awkwardness, embarrassment, even browser history deletes. It's odd, I know. We are all the same on this Earth of ours. It's not like we don't know what we all look like. But there we are.

In my opinion your attitude toward another forum member "stinks". Your opinion is ridiculed by the very tone in which you delivered it.

Good grief, did I say I was offended by nudity?  NO!  Additionally, I said "In my opinion".  Furthermore, the OP was seeking comments either way.  So, why do you care about what I think?

Be under no illusion that your style of comment has zero bearing on individuals that have selected an image.

Not that the rules of some other sites challenges have anything to do with us.

If you are going to include nudity in a photo it should be sensual and it is pretty darn ridiculous to try to include nudity that is not sexual.  Nudity need not be pornographic however.  Google Machine Photo for an example of excellent art photography which is sexual, but not pornographic.

In a sense a photo like your example given  is gratuitous rather than photography which is intentionally sensual for artistic reasons, but not pornographic.

I doin't think he was offended by a human body.  It is just not a great photo and the nudity is gratuitous.

Re: Nudity in Photo Challenges? Pro or Con?

1.  My first impression of the photo was that it was a composite . . . the child was added to the actual image.

2  The nudity does not bother me at all, and I think it does add to the image (why else would the child be covering its eyes?).  It's probably a good idea to have a statement of "slight non-sexual nudity"  or "NSFW" or something like that in the post at the other site, or something to alert people that there is a nude body in the image.

3.  The amount of nudity seems benign, and about as minor as is possible.

I know that here at DP, in challenges, there is no way for us hosts to add to our text in a challenge, once the submission stage has started.  So, no clear & easy way to give viewers a heads-up.  I've received one or two submissions with nudity, and each time, I noted that in the comment section of the particular challenge . . . that was the most I could do, even though I suspect that few people look at those comments before clicking on images that catch their eyes.

  1. I see nothing wrong with the photo.
  2. You have to be respectful of the participants and audience. If the target market is folks like me, nudity is okay. If you'd like something international with participants from India, Africa, the Middle East, the State of Georgia, and other less modern parts of the world, you may want to restrict it somewhat more. It's a different set of cultures, and it's important to be respectful of the beliefs and taboos of those cultures.
