Warning! Possible bug in newest Metz 58-AF1 and Metz 58-AF2 firmware
2

I downloaded the newest firmware for Metz 58 AF-1 and the flash does NOT fire in A or M mode. The PTTL and PTTL-HSS is not affected. I am posting this here to warn fellow Pentaxians against a possible problem. I posted this information on the "other" forum (www DOT pentaxforums DOT com) but since the issue seems important I am putting it here as well.

I've tested this on Metz 58 AF-1 (firmware v 5.0) using Pentax K-7 and kit lens (18-55 AL WR).

Can anyone confirm this problem?

Re: Warning! Possible bug in newest Metz 58-AF1 and Metz 58-AF2 firmware

As posted over on the other thread what do you mean A and M are you talking Auto and manual on flash or Av and manual on body.?

Either way seems a bit of an obvious error for QC to have missed.

My 48 v5.00 and 50 v4.00 do not show any issues.

Re: Warning! Possible bug in newest Metz 58-AF1 and Metz 58-AF2 firmware

Just did a quick test. Metz 58 AF-1 running firmware V.5 and K5-II. Runs wirelessly on Slave after the firing on camera then taking it off trick. Fires on camera using PTTL. Won't fire using A or M modes. I upgraded the firmware yesterday because of the supposed upgrade for K5-IIs.

"A" and "M" modes on the flash. I've tried this on "X" (flash sync) settings on the body.

Same here K-5 + 58 AF2

Same issue here. In A or M mode on the flash the flash does not fire (pre-flash does). K-5 + Metz 58-AF2 firmware 4.0

Have you reported it to Metz?

Ah wouldn't affect my 48 and 50 then (no Auto), I'll check Manual though when I get home.

Thanks for the info

I'll wait for METZ to clear the bug before updating the FW.

Is there a reason to update unless using K30 or K5II?

The new FW improves HSS with K-30/K5II. I'll skip this upgrade.

Solution(?): full link to the new firmware

It looks like Metz just have uploaded a new firmware version 4.1 for the 58-AF2 http://www.metz.de/en/flash-units/firmware-download-flash-units/mecablitz-58-af-2-digital/pentax.html
and version 5.1 for the 58-AF1 http://www.metz.de/en/flash-units/firmware-download-flash-units/mecablitz-58-af-1-digital/pentax.html

That was fast!!!

I wish Pentax (or Nikon, Fuji, Canon, Singer, ... add the missing name.) could issue FW fixes in 24 hours.

Every manufacturers releases firmware updates to

1 fix reported issues with compatibility

2 fix bugs

3 add functionality

4 correct major failings

of the above they will generally only mentions 3 and 4 as features of new releases.

So look at the list and decide if you want any of them if the answer is yes then update.

working in the IT industry I update everything  as soon as FW is released and sometimes before (from discussion with manufacturer I sometime get updates prior to release (not Metz)).

as a user your safest bet is wait 1-2 weeks from update posted then update anything else is building up risk of disappointment

What's you'r advice

Thanks

Dick

Works for me as well (Metz 58 AF-1 + Pentax K-7)

The newest firmware for Metz 58 AF-1 (v 5.1) available on the Metz site WORKS FLAWLESSLY. I've tested it on both A, M, PTTL, and PTTL-HSS flash modes - everything works as it should have.

For Metz 58 AF-2 the newest v. 4.1 version is here.

I urge everyone who has v 5.0 (Metz 58 AF-1) or v. 4.0 (Metz 58 AF-2) firmware to upgrade to v.5.1 and v.4.1 respectively.

In short: PROBLEM SOLVED!

Re: new firmware 5.1 fixes the bug (Auto, Manual)

Because I'm a Mac user... I sent a comment from the Metz website asking when it would be available. In less that 24 hours I received a reply with the file attached. The email said that the update will be posted to the Metz website as soon as possible, though as of this morning, it isn't up yet.
