Making video with Canon 600D

Dear All,

I am a little bit disappointed. I had been grinding on replacing the Canon 300D with a newer one for long. Then, reading the reviews I chose 600D. I meticulosly investigated the different reviews, and found the Canon video performance better, than the similarly priced Nikons. The review opinions told, that Canon is better. But, it is only theory.

What I forgot is to check the videos of the two brands on the net. It was shocking. I thought that I can hit two birds with one stone, replacing the older camera, and replacing the 13 year old Pana camcorder. It was a faulty thought. The recordings of Canon are usless, seems to omit every second picture. The resplution is almost indifferent. I have no problems with AF, I set it by hand.

So, if I want to make good video, I have to invest a lot in a good camcorder.

Sincerely,

Endre

Google  what your thread is called and you will find some awesome examples of video with the T3i. It's all about .. lighting , lens choice, perspective.... ect.... if you feel that your camera is defective, have it checked out. ..

Maybe you are not doing it right.

It makes a huge difference what lens you are using. T3i examples on the internet are with different lens and user skill levels. With a camcorder, it's always the same lens fixed onto it.

The kit lens on the T3i probably won't look that great versus other choices.

A DSLR requires the time to get set the white balance, exposure, etc. correct. Many camcorders take care of a lot of those settings for you.

The replacement for most camcorders is a smartphone. The 600d is a low budget film camera.

It's a question of ergonomy and continuous AF. Camcorder is designed for filming, a DSLR not.

Hmm - I don't have issues with my 600D dropping frames.

Sounds to me like you either have a defective or a memory card that is too slow.

If it is a Sandisk Class 10 Ultra/Extreme etc... Did you get it from Ebay?

(There are quite a few counterfeit cards about these days)

Other possibilities may be :-

1. Your PC is too slow to play the video back. (Try playback using the 600D)

2. You are shooting in very low light and the shutter speed is slower that 1/30.

Hope this helps,

Regards

Andy.

Shutter speed also makes a difference when recording video.

Re: Making video with Canon 600D

I am unfamiliar with the T3i, so I am speaking from my experience with the T4i.

Shooting video is quite simple. If shooting 1080p with 30fps, use 1/60 as your shutter speed. If using 24fps, use 1/50 as your speed.  Put camera into manual mode.  Choose desired aperture. Finally select Auto ISO and choose exposure level (correct, under or over by stops). At first stick with tripod and stationary subjects. Autofocus then, then switch to manual Focus and double check focus using 10x zoom in live view. Start shooting. You will get awesome results every time.  Make sure you are using a very fast card.

How do you "choose exposure level"?

Re: Making video with Canon 600D

Dear Yasfan,

Unfortunately, I wasn't mistaken. T ried the cameras's viseo capability under the best conditions. Bright sun shine, an avarege basic 18-55 mm IS lens, the 1080, and 720 resolution. The full HD brougnt the worst performance. Anytime, when the camera is moved horizontally, all the vertival lines of the recorded objects jumps. I checked the official and other sites for sample images, and found the same result. When I checked the Nikon cameras, I haven't fount this phenomena. It is clear, these cameras makes 1080/50-60, and not /25-30 recording.

Best regards,

Endre

Dear Zakkix,

You can bet, I did. I have been making fotos for 44 years, and viseos 27 years. With 6 cameras (Nikon, Canon), and camcorders (Canon, Panasonic)

Re: Making video with Canon 600D

Dear Xi5,

I will try everything. I searched the net, but I haven't fount a sample without the phenomena I mentioned. The worst result was showed under the Canon 600D deep review.

Re: Making video with Canon 600D

Dear Andy,

Unfortunately, I wasn't mistaken. I Tried the cameras's viseo capability under the best conditions. Bright sun shine, an avarege basic 18-55 mm IS lens, the 1080, and 720 resolution, the memory card is class 10. I checked the recordings on the camera, and my powerful computer.

The full HD brought the worst performance.

I saw the deep review of the camera, and there are two sample recording. One is worse, than the other. Check the Nikon D3200, or 5200. No fault.

Anyway, thank for your advice!

Best regards,

Endre

Re: Making video with Canon 600D

Dear Zigi,

I think, it is the key of the problem. I left the camera deciden on shutter speeed insted of setting it by hand. Than You for the good advice!

Re: Making video with Canon 600D

Dear WilbaW,

I think, it was the culprit. I left the camera choose the shutter speed instead of setting it by hand to 1/50.

Thank You for Your reaction.

Re: Making video with Canon 600D

Dear Dsharp,

Unfortunately I couldn't steal a little time to go on this topic. Meantime I got some advice, the best is to set the shutter speed to 1/50. I left the camera decide on the speed, and it seems to be the error.

I will be very grateful to anybody for good ideas.

Thanks for Your reaction.

Best regards,

Endre
