Thank you all so much...

...for, while proving my point, turning this thread into kind of a tribute one to the very special output of this camera.

...As for me, this particular plan will be put aside for the moment, as I am now considering getting a Canon EOS-M to supplement my line-up.

Together with the EF-S 10-22 (...the only EF-S lens ever to impress me...) this will cater for a great WA sidekick for my 1DMKIV with the added benefit of being compatible with my current lenses.

As money is a limited resource, this will go down my priority list.

...It won't leave it, though

All the best!

PK

Catching the last ray

Dinner interrupted. Late light was painting the orchids on the kitchen table in such a delicious way that I had no choice but put the fork down and go get the D200.

amazing shot, and amazingly sharp. Interesting how the shadow projects on right part of the picture (left side of the child's face) it almost splits the picture in 2 tones.

Re: The Amazing D200.

Hi PhotoKahn,

Three photos taken with the amazing D200 back in 2007.  I recall, it was hot humid day in DC.  All three were taken with the DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G Nikkor lens.  I have the D40X, D60 & D200 because of the CCD sensor.  Please see my gallery for photos from my D40X.  Happy shooting...

Re: The Amazing D200.

Is the D200 sensor the same 10.1 mp Sony sensor used in some other cameras including several Sonys?

I like my D7100.  I love my D200.  It just has an OOC image quality that I really prefer.

Re: The Amazing D200.

Do you mind posting a couple of OOC (or minimally tweaked) images from the D7100 and D200 for comparison (same subject / lens etc). Thanks.

Re: Beautiful image…which lens? (no text)

That image was with a Nikon 18-200 (1st Gen).

I'd be more than happy to shoot some side by side, however my D200 is currently on loan (my brother).  I'll gladly do some side by side as soon as I get it back.

About the comparison...no hurry, whenever you get a chance.

The image looks better than what you would expect from the typical reputation of a super-zoom lens.

Re: Beautiful image…which lens? (no text)

Thank you for the comments.  I must have a fairly good copy because it's proven to be quite contrary to what just about everyone says (except maybe KR) about it.  It certainly falls apart in less than favorable light sooner than my Tamron 17-50  or my Nikon 80-200 2.8....especially on the D7100 which really magnifies a lenses weaknesses, but that's not a surprise.

As soon as he gets back from his trip, I'll get you some comparison images if someone else doesn't first.

Barging in

Chicago river shot manually underexposed by 2/3 f stop. Only editing done was a very mild sharpening on Photoshop Elements. Colors and composition were not altered. The D200 makes it so easy.

Re: Beautiful image…which lens? (no text)

I just got my D200 back yesterday, and haven't had a chance to do any real comparison images yet for you.....I will over the next day or two......but I did take a few images today for my wife using the D7100 and Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and the D200 and Nikon 18-200 f3.5-5.6.  These two images really don't do a whole lot to illustrate what I mean by the colors I see from the D200's CCD, but I wanted to share them anyway.

The reason...there have been a few comments I've seen in these D200 threads about it really was a rotten camera, and how time has made us forget how bad it is.  Here's my thought....here are two images (downsized, admittedly), processed VERY similarly from NEF to JPEG, one with the "latest and greatest" 24mp DX body Nikon has to offer, with a VERY well regarded (by most...I've been absolutely blown away with my specific copy) constant aperture lens, vs. Nikon's "latest and greatest" DX body circa 2005 with a mediocre at best "super zoom".  The difference I've been seeing in the images I processed today have had more to do with the lens quality than anything IMHO, but what really surprised me is just how well the D200 images do against such a well regarded, and "cutting edge" sensor/DX body.

Re: Beautiful image…which lens? (no text)

Thanks for the photos. The D200 image doesn't really look worse than that from the D7100 (in fact the color and highlight may be better - I know it is not the exact same image for a direct comparison). Look forward to your follow-up.

OK, two quick OOC NEF's to JPEG.  The ONLY editing done to them was to downsize because the D7100 file is too large and DPR won't accept the full size file.  They were in pretty strong sunlight.  The D7100 image definitely shows more detail but I've been surprised by the real world difference considering 10mp to 24mp although the D7100 files retain a huge amount of detail in cropping over the D200 images.  Color wise, it really doesn't show as clearly here as the original files do, but the D200 colors are much deeper and smoother than the D7100 files.  In fact it was strange sitting here looking at the two.  I initially thought the images were reversed and was really confused that I preferred the colors of the D7100 files over the D200 until I realized that the D200's numbering had reset.
