Adapted lenses on the Oly e-px bodies
2

One of the delights of the u4/3 system is the ability to use adapted lenses, particularly effective using the vf2 external viewfinder.  I used the e-p3 for these samples.

Note: It's disappointing how badly embedded imagess are mangled by dpreview's software.  Please look at the original size images to see the true quality of these compositions.

55/3.5k micro-Nikkor

180/2.8 Nikkor

I have great hopes for even better results with my soon to be shipped ep5.  The addition of the vf4, 5 axis ibis, and focus peaking should make manual focusing a joy.

Nice shots...and totally agree. Wished I had the loot right now for the EP5 and it's stabilized viewfinder (and other features). Although I do use native auto focus lenses, I really enjoy shooting with the old manual focus ones...some of which are exceptional (regardless of what you read on here sometimes) nice!

note:

I also agree that DPR images (even at full size, better but...) leave much to be desired in quality. I think Detail Man did somewhat of a study on the compression they use a while back. They have said somewhere that they were working on a better algorithm...believe it when I see it. I've even noticed it on some B&W pics, which were withdrawn from my galleries, since noticed extreme posterization compared to the original (uploaded size). The tonal transitions were awful on a couple...and seems color is worse sometimes.

Considering that this is a photography site, the way they represent our sample images is an embarrassment.  But perhaps that's their way of keeping attention on gear instead of pictures.  From now on I think I'll post links instead of embedded images.

Love the last one - beautiful colors! And yes, it's very sharp.

What image quality issues?

I have a 30" NEC Multisync PA301w ( whatever those numbers mean! ) and I see no difference in quality between the smaller and bigger images. The same except smaller. Maybe your color space is off. On my screen, the first image is off by 1/2 stop too dark. Your camera metered on the white and gave you an 10% gray.

Nice images!  The little light Nikkor works well doesnt it.  I found it to be quite a surprise

I have the EM5, so the EP5 you are about to get will amaze you with the great IBIS and image quality.  Hope you enjoy it and keep posting

That lens has probably been used for more professional-quality macro images than any other lens in the history of photography

Thanks for the feedback, Weegee.  I see a significant difference in acuity between the downsized DPR presentation and the Smugmug downsized version of approximately the same size.   That's not the case on the other photography sites I routinely visit.

No metering involved in the hummer-pic.  I was in full manual mode, relied on the image in the evf, and adjusted afterwards in Lightroom.  I absolve my camera of any complicity in my errors.

True, but my well used copy 55 has surprised me on several fronts:

  • The rich construction/durability of the body.  Mine in a K version, manufactured in 1975, and is still silky smooth to focus, with sharp clicks when I change aperture settings.
  • The affordability of the lens.  I picked it up at a high end camera store for only $99.
  • How well it works on a u4/3 body.
