Nex 5n noisy lcd when shooting in low light

My Sony Nex 5n LCD becomes really noisy when shooting at low light (dark environment). Although it doesn't show up when you are reviewing the pictures. Is it normal? I didn't have this issue with my previous Canon S90.

This doesn't seems to be happening in Day or very bright environment.

Yes it is normal. To show a usable picture in live view you have to use a kind of video mode, taking 25 or 30 fps,. In dark situations, the camera has to bump up the ISO, to give you a usable view, this can end in noisy liveview. The exposuretime off the picture in the end is shorter and at lower ISO and will not show the noise. Why your Canon did not have this? Maybe that camera used a larger apperture, or it applied more noise reduction in live view. Maybe the LCD was smaller, not showing the noise as much...

We can have it two ways in the dark:

- fast update and grainy images (due to short integration times, physics dictate)

- slow update and less grainy images (the price to pay is lag)

Sony offer a grainy view almost without lag even when it gets dark - to me that is a sound choice.

As many said, this is cause there is no magic in the LCD, it is still a video in low light, and to achieve it, sony bumps the ISO for preview/LCD/EVF. On a conventional DSLR you would get a dark viewfinder. On an electronic viewfinder you get noise, but you are able to see what you are shooting. As others have said, the other option is lag.

My NEX-3N's LCD is very noisy as well in low light, especially if you set the LCD brightness to "sunny weather". However, under the same condition, the LCD noise of my other NEX-5R is a lot less without significant lag. The noise in the pictures are minimum in both cases. Not sure what is the reason. Maybe Sony used some kind of noise reduction on the signal to the NEX-5R display?

And people will complain no matter which of the two solutions manufacturers would choose. I'd suggest they had an option for the user to select the low light refresh rate.

I'm of the opposite opinion. I think Fuji did it right keeping the images in EVF clean at the expense of motion lag. We are talking about low light here, static scenes, so there is hardly any detriment other than esthetics to having a lag. But having a noisy image prevents one from clearly seeing what he's shooting, and especially bad for manual focusing.

Did you use the same lens and apperture settings on both cameras? The Nex shows their picture with apperture closed to the set value. it is posible that the 5n has a less noisy sensor, or asyou say there is some noise reduction

Try changing Setup/Live View Display/Setting Effect/OFF. It defaults to ON.

The display will then show the preview before the lens is stopped down to the selected aperture, so more light reaches the sensor and there is less noise.

Two cameras side by side. exactly the same settings. The pictures taken (RAW, with ISO12800, F4, 1/50 sec) have about the same amount of noise, so I can only assume the sensors are about the same. The only thing I could think of is the 5R has some noise reduction before the signal is sent to the LCD.

Re: Nex 5n noisy lcd when shooting in low light

On my NEX 3, it didn't seem to be as much of an issue. I find the 5N definitely gets grainier in low light than the earlier bodies. This also seems to affect the focus peaking, and hence manual focus. I found on the 3, I could easily get focus peaking on eyes in portraits in dim light. On the 5N, this seemed much harder to do.
