70-200mm Tamron USD or Signma HSM

Hi all,

This question has been asked before but I don't think the Tamron USD was available yet. To the owner of either of these lenses, can you share your thoughts please?
Personally I like Tamron because I had a bad AF experience with the Sigma 15-70mm F2.8. But the Sigma HSM telephoto lens is a few hundred bucks cheaper than Tamron.

Thoughts?

Thanks../Ken

I have the Sigma 70-200mm HSM Macro, not the newer OS version, but it is an absolutely fantastic lens. I've heard the HSM OS is even better.

Haven't used the Tamron USD though so I can't tell you how the Sigmas stack up to it, I hear that is a very good lens.

I don't think you can really go wrong with either, so I would probably opt for the cheaper Sigma.

Thanks EarthQuake.  I have an a57 so there is no OS version for a-mount.  Do you use Sony Alpha cam as well?

I have a Sony 70-200G but I ordered a Tamron 70-200 USD. The 70-200G is not tack sharp wide open. The Tammy looks better on Canon/Nikon and in addition to that it is weathersealed, which pairs better with my sealed body

Cheers

Martin

Hi,

I have been struggling with the same question. It looks like Tamron is sharper than Sigma but the reviews aren't quite consistent with this Sigma lens (some say it's soft at 70mm, some that it's very sharp, same with at 200mm). Sigmas might have AF problems with SLTs too. So I'm leaning towards the Tamron even with the significant price difference. I would be very interested in hearing more about actual users of either lens.

yeah, I like to hear more for Sigma owners in particular too.  I know Gary Fong is a Sigma user too and he doesn't seems to have problems with it.  However, I need more evidence to convince me otherwise.
But I have to say, I'm leaning towards Tamron too.

FWIW I have two Sigmas on my A57 (18-50 and 70-300). No problems with AF or anything else. For what they cost they are VERY good lenses. The 70-300 I bought a few weeks back has a sticker on the box stating suitability for the SLTs, so I guess they've sorted their problems. I did actually return a Tamron 55-200 recently - the IQ was dreadful - but I think there was a fault with it, so I wouldn't draw any conclusions from that. I believe it's common practice for lenses being returned to be just sold on again by online sellers in particular...and that's what I had. I really try to only buy from shops now.
