SOLUTION to the GR's red problem with Lightroom...
5

Yesterday, we had a long and boring and confusing technical discussion of the problem Lightroom (and Aperture) have dealing with a lot of bright red in GR files, using its standard "embedded" color profile. I don't usually see these things at all and I saw this one IMMEDIATELY, so its not trivial. Fortunately, Adobe had developed a color profile for the GR and they'd included it with ACR version 8.1 for Photoshop users. Lightroom users with ACR and Photoshop on their system saw the benefit of it too. UNFORTUNATELY, Adobe did NOT provide an easy way for Lightroom-only users to access this color profile, perhaps to make an upgrade to LR 5 seem like the only choice when it becomes available in a month or two???

For whatever reason, it was a bugger to figure out how to get Lightroom to read this color profile. Another poster on another forum I spend time on took the time to write up this handy little guide for those who don't want to wade through the whole discussion from yesterday and he agreed to let me post it over here also. I only know this fellow by his screen name on the other forum, but he was INCREDIBLY helpful to some of us trying to work through this problem, and so here's how to solve the problem in Lightroom (sorry, Aperture users, no help to you here):

========================================

Quick fix:

  1. Extract/Copy "Pentax Ricoh GR Adobe Standard.dcp" from ACR 8.1 Beta or download the file from here
  2. Shutdown LR if it's still running, then copy the .dcp file from step1 to
    Vista\Win7 - "C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\" or
    Mac "Macintosh HD/Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/"
    **Note**: These folders are normally hidden so you have to unhide them. This is not difficult, but requires a quick google search for instructions... It takes about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Start Lightroom, change profile to "Adobe Standard" under Camera Calibration in Develop Module for your specific photo and you should now see the correct color appear.

More detail if you're interested:

Lightroom and ACR camera profiles are installed in different directories so LR4 can't read ACR camera profiles.

When LR4 is installed, by default all camera profiles that are read by LR are installed to
Vista\Win7 - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.3\Resources\CameraProfiles
Mac - Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.app/Contents/Resources/CameraProfiles/

When ACR is installed, by default all camera profiles that are read by ACR is installed to
Vista\Win7 - C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Adob e Standard\
Mac - Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles
You can also install custom profiles to be read by both Lightroom and ACR. These need to be installed to Vista\Win7 - "C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\"
Mac "Macintosh HD/Users/[your username]/Library/Application support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/".

So there are a total of 3 folders which contain these camera profiles and so lots of confusion on where to place them so they can be seen.

Rule of thumb is, you should install new or custom profiles to the user location, installing them to the program specific default location usually doesn't work and can't be read.

===================================================

I hope this is helpful to some. It was enormously helpful to me...

I'm using 4.4 Joel, but it should work with 5 as well. The key is to put it in the folder inside the hidden "library" folder in your "user" directory, not the library file in the main, root level, directory. I had tried every possible location with no luck until I un-hid that folder and put it in the profile folder buried deep in there.

Good luck,

I am running LR5 and LR 4.4 side by side with no issues...  Do not have a Ricoh GR yet though.  It is causing serious GAS.

Apparently, the only difference with Mountain Lion is that you need to hold down the Option key before you click the Go menu in the Finder. Then you will see your user directory Library on the drop-down menu. It's described here, under "Methods to Temporarily Reveal the ~/Library Folder:"

I think I have it, thanks I was not using the Go, I was just using option when I launched finder (duh). What I think landed in LR is called Untitled Pr/Users/my name...

I hope this is it and I  hope I can rename it but want to check with others first.

Thanks

Re: SOLUTION to the GR's red problem with Lightroom...

I am also having difficulty with finding this and am on a Mac running 10.8.4.

Looking in Library > Application Support > Adobe > Camera Raw > CameraProfiles > there is a file called Index.dat. I tried to use Invisiblix to open the file to make the extraction, but it is not possible with this application becaue it will not work on a .dat file so I can not extract the Pentax Ricoh GR Adobe Standard.dcp file.

Can anyone offer a suggestion on getting this file? Also, I am using LR 4.4 and Photoshop CS 5.

Thanks in advance!
