Moving up from 1100D

Basically I'm a photographer who's looking to do more freelance photography for family and friends etc. I've been doing photography as a hobby since I was 16 (I'm now 23), taking nature shots and things like that, but now I want to start making money and doing more portraits.

Last summer I bought a 1100D, simply because it was the only thing I could afford at the time and my old 300D was dying. Now I'm starting to make a bit more money and I would like to move up from the 1100D. I have a budget of about £600, maybe £700 at a push, so I'd like to know what's the best Canon camera that I can get for that?

Canon EOS 1100D (EOS Rebel T3 / EOS Kiss X50) Canon EOS 300D (EOS Digital Rebel / EOS Kiss Digital)

I would suggest that you have a look at the 650D/T4i and the 60D, both very capable cameras that should fit your budget.

You can buy the 60D on Amazon UK with a £65 cashback offer until the end of May.

So it comes to £542 body only, £609 with 18-55 kit lens or £695 with the 18-135 lens.

There is nothing wrong with an 1100D for the type of photography you want to do.

I would suggest you buy a couple prime lenses instead of a new camera.

85mm f/1.8 - Best portrait lens for an APS-C camera

35mm f/2 - for group shots

50mm f1.8 - inexpensive with good bokeh at f/1.8

Great, thank you.

I have the 50mm f/1.8 already and I love it.

I would have to agree with Mr Ed M. In the right hands the 1100D can produce some fine images. Take a look at the gallery of our friend Carol [Car629]. She has made the very most out of her 1100D.

Re: Moving up from 1100D

For those that might be interested, Carol (Car629) just bought a Canon 60D (see her post on the other forum).

I took a peek and find that you already know, so I'm editing this...it would be nice to see how she likes the upgrade compared to the 1100D.
