Love my EX1/TL500: Is EX2F really an upgrade for me?
1

2 years ago I bought my Samsung EX1 (TL500 in the USA). I'm very happy with almost everything:

-Sharp and bright lens

-Nice controls

-Great build quality

-Very good tilt and twist display

Some things could be better though, I don't like the overall speed when handling this camera, everything seems a little sluggish.

I don't care much about Video quality or WiFi options, although I might use them if they work great.

I was just wondering if the EX2F is a big improvement over my current EX1 when it comes down to picture quality an handling speed.

Samples of some pictures I took with my EX1:

I also loved my EX1. I upgraded to the EX2 and have been very pleased. The improvements are incremental and it is still in many ways the same camera. It is faster which has been a nice improvement.

You can take a look at my gallery and you'll see a bunch of EX2 photos there.

1080p video as opposed to Super VGA seems a pretty big change. I do not use video much but it is nice to have it available and only having VGA put me off the EX1. It is rather ironic that I bought an Olympus XZ-1 instead and anyone who has experienced XZ-1 video will see the humour in that.

Anything with a better lens is an upgrade.  Going from 1.8 to 1.4 is a good change.  But it's still a small sensor, so don't have crazy expectations.  imho, a real upgrade may be to get a nx300 + 30mm f2 lens.  still a compact package, but that would be a real upgrade.

I already have experience with Samsung NX 10, NX100 and NX200 cameras and several lenses. I decided to keep only my NX10, 30mm, 18-55mm and SEF20 flash.

NX10 turned out to be the nicest NX camera body for me to use and has EVF. The 30mm lens is a keeper The 18-55mm zoom and flash unit are sometimes useful to complement a nice and compact NX setup. I just didn't like my former NX100 and NX200 as much as I like my NX10.

My main camera right now is Pentax K-01 and several AF- and non AF lenses. It's a wonderful brick to use.

I'm considering replacing my beloved compact Samsung EX1 for something else. EX2F comes to mind because of current prices, but Pentax MX-1 is also possible.

Re: Love my EX1/TL500: Is EX2F really an upgrade for me?

Does the EX1 grey out things if you dial in things like saturation decrease/increase? I am amazed how rudimentary the EX2 menu controls are compared with something like an Olympus XZ-10 which is not even Olympus' top compact. Have Samsung gone backwards with the EX2? With the XZ-10 you can have different setting for each mode, adjust the ISO cap, noise reduction, etc. etc...

It is fascinating me how little effort Samsung have gone into enhancing the programmability of the camera when they have produced such a nice camera body with plenty of controls. I have a feeling the EX2f might even have gone backwards in some respects. I must say the Samsung EX2f is OK for my purposes as it was cheap but I would not recommend anyone else buy it unless they look carefully at the standard compact level of functionality and the illogical clashes in the menu controls. All the effort has gone into WIFI. I would definitely buy the Pentax unless you need the wide lens.

Today I bought a brand new 'open box' EX2F with only 32 clicks for only € 145,-. At this silly money I just couldn't resist anymore.

First impressions of the build quality: It feels a little cheaper and lighter than my all metal EX1, but the EX2F is still a very well made camera.

The rest just feels like my trusty EX1, but the EX2F is noticeably 'snappier'.

I hope to get some time the next few days to take some pictures to compare.

Let us know! I still use my ex1 at the seaside to talke pictures of my daughter when I don't want to bring my nx cameras or lenses.

Still one of the best p&s as to iq.

Sounds like a real bargain. I cannot compare it with the EX1 but it seems a pretty solid camera in itself and as you confirm speed is not a problem. Best of luck with the camera. I do like the camera a lot.

My EX2F seems to have a quite unusual serial number:

Has anyone seen a serial number like this before?

Re: Love my EX1/TL500: Is EX2F really an upgrade for me?

The format looks pretty much the same as mine. In what way do you think it is odd? It is probably not a good idea to show your Serial No. on the internet as someone may register it or clone it and this may cause you problems with warranty etc.. Just a thought.

One point is that my Serial No plate has a CE number and a tick which I would have thought as you are in the Netherlands that your camera should have CE certification if it is locally sourced. Your camera has FCC certification which is US standards. Possibly you bought it in the US else it is probably an import.

The box probably tells you more about the sourcing as the type number EC-EX2Fxxx...GB says it is UK sourced for mine and Samung firmware is often type specific.

I haven't had any camera before with those underscores at the serial number. I always had numbers and letters without the underscores, I was just wondering if the underscores are normal.

Mine has no underscores. Cannot help you there I am afraid. Not sure if it has any significance.
