7100 - What prime lenses do you use?

I'm seriously consider getting the D7100.  Question... what prime lenses do you use?  50/1.4? 50/1.8?

If so, will that make it a 75mm equivalent?

Thanks

Nikkor AF-S 28/1.8

Just right for D7100 - lightweight enough and resolves 24 MP. Speedy autofocus.

With 1.3x crop you have 42 and 58 mm equivalent.

50mm f1.8 is ok, the f1.4 is nicer but twice the price. yes it equates to 75mm in 35mm parlance and close to 100mm in crop mode. Its good for portraits, close family groups and selective landscape. If its you only lens, you might find it restrictive just on its own. If that's the case, I suggest something shorter.

35mm DX 1.8

AF-D 50mm 1.8

AF-S 85mm 1.8

To get to the ideal ff length of 85mm you'd need a 58mm on DX, which does not exist. Instead use a 60mm fast macro.

The crop factor on the D7100 is 1.5 while all Nikon lenses have their focal length expressed in full frame terms.

Thanks all.  How is the bokeh with those lens? Are they good at creating a shallow DOF?

I think all the new primes gives a very good bokeh.

I have 35mm f/1.8 and the old 50mm f/1.8. I think the new 50mm is better: http://photographylife.com/nikon-50mm-f1-8g-for-wedding-photography

I am loving the 85.1/8, having sold the excellent Sigma 50/1.4...  I like the more flattering close-up portraits with the 85mm.  It's VERY sharp and the detail is maximized wit the D7100.

Same here

Same here - the revamped AF-S versions of these lenses (Miraculously with RING Type AFS rather than the Crappy cog type AFS you`d expect for the price) are vast improvements on the originals

As it should be, since focal length doesn't depend on what size sensor is behind it.

I have the 35 and 50 1.8G primes.  I'd say that I prefer the 50 and generally will only switch to the 35 when I can't back up enough.  Most of my shooting is with my 80-200 f/2.8D, though, so I'm sure I'd like an 85 1.8.

i have the d7000 and the last trip i took i mainly used the sigma 30 1.4 and the nikon 85 1.8.  both are great lenses.  i love the 30 for walking around and that 85 is perfect for portraits.

Do you think this lens is worth the premium you pay over the 35 1.8 DX?  I know I would prefer the 28 focal length but not sure it is worth the price difference.

Thanks

Have you had any problems with CA on this lens?  I have read that it can be very bad.  Thanks.

I much prefer the 85mm f1.8g to the 50mm f1.8g for portraits, at least for head and shoulders type. It's an amazing lens.

Agree on the 85 1.8G.

I also use the 35 F1.8G DX

and a 50mm F1.8 Series E (ai-s)

definitely better rendition, better contra-light (Neveg actually go bad), faster AF, brilliant close-ups. And 28 much better than 35 on DX. It is safe to use only this lens - you'll got photograph in any condition.

And Nikon claims weather protection for this lens.

You pay for what you get.

Not at all...  The Nikon 85/1.8 is simply one of the best available.

Re: 7100 - What prime lenses do you use?

I fairly regularly use the 50mm f1.4 Nikkor, the 85mm f2 Nikkor, the 105mm f1.8 Nikkor, the 180mm f2.8 Nikkor, and the 500mm f8 mirror reflex Nikkor. These are all manual focus, but in that I manually focused them on film cameras for years, I have no issue with manually focusing them on the D7100. And it makes following focus quite easy.

And yes, they all have a crop factor of 1.5x, so the 180 is effectively a 270mm f2.8 anf the 105 is effectively a 157mm f1.8. And the 50 is, yes, effectively a 75.

But what crop factor giveth it takes away -- none of my lovely Nikkor wideangles are wideangle anymore!
