You can get a T4i with the 18-135 STM lens for $799 at Amazon.  The T5i with the same lens would run $1099.  Not worth the extra $300, IMHO.

Or you can get the T5i with the 18-55 STM lens for $899.

Both cameras will surpass the 300D in features and capabilities.

Re: Replacing EOS 300 D

Lots of people have posted similar questions, take a look through this forum and you'll find a lot of good advice.

Take a look at the Cameras section of this site, check out the detailed reviews, they are full of great info.

I recently upgraded from a 300D to a T4i and am very happy with it.  I'm getting less grainy images in low-light situations.  With the new 18-135 IS STM, I am carrying one lens now instead of 2 (original kit lens and a 28-135).  For the types of shots I take, this lens is all I need 99% of the time.  Amazon has this bundle right now for $799 US.

Be advised that the grip is a little smaller than the 300D - originally I wasn't sure I liked it, but after using it for awhile I don't notice the difference now.

Also recommend once you start narrowing down your choices, use the Compare Cameras feature - decide which features are "want", "nice", or "dealbreakers" for you.   In this case, I'd suggest comparing the t3i, t4i, t5i side by side.  You may decide the t3i meets all your needs and save some money.

Good luck.

I also would say the T4i + 18-135 STM is a worthy upgrade. I own it myself since sept last year. Before that I also owned a 300D. I first had doubts about the smaller grip but it proved to be OK. T4i is better in all respects.

Hi Ty,

I notice you have the following lens:

Canon EFS 18-55 mm lens

Sigma AF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 DG APO macro lens

Here are some options:

1. Canon T3i/600D body ~$550

2. Canon T5i/700D body ~$749.

I would skip the T4i as it does offer any benefit over one or the other above.

The Canon T3i/600D is an excellent camera update and the T5i/700D has the added convenience of touchscreen.

With what you have left over, why not consider adding a fast prime lens to your system for those night/portrait/landscape shots? You may find that it may end up replacing your kits lens

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II ~$100

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM ~$399

Canon EF 35mm f/2 $310

Thanks

Re: Replacing EOS 300 D

Costco currently is selling the 60D with the 18-200mm IS lens for $999. Similar IQ, more robust camera that could be more comfortable (personal choice) and even more zoom range with similar IQ. Just another option as previous models are cleared out. Since the lens sells for about $550, the 60D is a bargain at $450.

Hi Ty,

Nice addition.

To the OP:

Get rid of the 18-55 non-IS. The original 18-55 that came with the 300D is inferior compared to the later IS version. Or consider the 18-135 STM (more bulky but with a more convenient range).

Sigma AF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 DG APO macro lens

Here are some options:

1. Canon T3i/600D body ~$550

2. Canon T5i/700D body ~$749.

Sorry but you are misinformed. The T4i has much improved over the T3i. The T4i focus system is the same as 60D (9x cross and f2.8 for center) and the T4i is the first Rebel with touch UI and hybrid AF for video.

For the OP:

You might also consider the EOS-M: it's quite small, unobtrusive and it can do everything the T4i can do except for shots that require instant/low-light AF. It seems to be quite cheap these days in the U.S..

If easy video is important you might also consider the 100D + 18-55 STM; its video focus covers most of the sensor which is more convenient than the partial coverage of the T4i/T5i/EOS-M.

Re: Replacing EOS 300 D

If you can put money down before May 4, then Canon's web store has a deal where you can buy many of their refurbished EOS bodies and get $125 off orders of $500 or more. So, with that budget, you can manage a 60D, T4i, T3i, or T3 and any of the lens kits (the 60D gives you the options of the 18-135 or the 18-200, the rest have an 18-55 kit lens) or just body only. If not, I've also been watching the prices on Adorama and B&H Photo and they both have been pretty reasonable. Amazon, however, hasn't been very good for getting the most bang for a buck (at least, in my experience).

I just noticed in your first post you're a young photography hobbyist. If I'm correct and you're serious with this hobby then you should make sure the camera does not a become a nuisance but instead is fun to keep using and gives you enough headroom to learn.

So pick a recent(ish) Rebel with at least a big 3" display at the back that gives you instant feedback on your pictures. The 300D is horrible in that respect. I would look around for a modern Rebel (550D and onwards) because all of them are suitable to learn about lighting, exposure, composition and RAW post processing and provide roughly the same good image quality. This would leave budget for extras like books, software, lenses and flash.
