Please help me to verify - Left AF Problem or lack there of

Hi,

I got my second D800 today. I did some preliminary left AF test using Nikon 28mm F1.8 (AF-S) lens. I am not sure whether I can reach a definite conclusion. Could anyone please help me to verify.

First image is the taken with Center Focus Point - 100% crop (no AF fine tune, F1.8). The subject is at 10 feet.

Second image is taken with Left most focus point - 100% crop (no AF fine tune, F1.8). Subject is 10 feet away

Left AF Focus point - 100% Crop F1.8

Third image is the also shot using the Left AF Focus Point (IN LIVE VIEW).

Left AF Focus Point - Live View (100% Crop, 28mm F1.8)

Based on this test, I am not sure whether I have a problem with left AF problem.

I have not done any AF micro adjustment to make sure that the PDAF is spot on.

Your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Looks good.  If 1.8 was not a little sharper in the center, I would think the lens is underperforming.

Yes, it is also from B&H. The serial number is 3065xxx. The previous one was 3062xxx. It is used by my wife.

If you can't find it and have to ask the world to verify then I think you are looking too hard.

My eye seems to be tired now. Usually I am able to do these kinds of things, but with two D800 came in the last two weeks, I thought it is better to check with others and get some clarification.

Thanks for posting your results. I've had 3 D800s that can't focus the 28/1.8G with the left AF points. I was starting to think the D800 has a basic design flaw, but your results show that good focus is possible.

You are welcome. My D800 can focus with left AF although I am not happy with my copy of 28mm  F1.8

I am thinking of getting the new 18-35mm AF-S G lens.

Can anyone tell me if my arm hurts?

I'm not sure if I have a problem with pain in my arm. I was hoping someone could tell me if I have a problem or not.

But seriously, no, you do not have a problem. But isn't the definition of a problem: A matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome.

Shouldn't one be able to determine this matter or situation on there own? I'd imagine if they could not, then there is nothing to be dealt with or overcome, and therefore there would be no problem.

Just saying.

You may be right but I appreciate the OP having the courage to post his result.  The left auto focus issue is a reality and can't be pushed under the rug.  Your beef is with Nikon for not coming forward to clear the air on this issue.

I wasn't trying to express any "beef". I was just pointing out that it was pretty obvious the OP does not have an issue, and was being tongue and cheek about it.

But do I have a "beef" with Nikon's QC? Yes I do, as I was one who DID have the LAF issue, and had to send my camera to Melville on my dime to get it repaired.

Yes, but it's perfectly okay IMO to ask others for confirmation. Isn't this something the forum is also here for ?

There seems a very slight loss of quality on image 2.

Why use a geometric pattern as a target when Nikon warn you they may cause poor results?

Geometric patterns can be 100% good - if you align the AF point perfect.

In shot 1 the red rectangle indicates alignment is a little bit off centre, and in shot 2 somewhat more off centre.

This is not the kind of geometric pattern which creates misfocus.

Geometric patterns can be 100% good - if you align the AF point perfect.

You're making that rule up.

In shot 1 the red rectangle indicates alignment is a little bit off centre, and in shot 2 somewhat more off centre.

And ?

Yes, I agree that there seems to be a very slight loss of quality in extreme left focus point (PDAF and LiveView). I did a quick test in outdoor and following are the images

1) Left AF Focus Point (28mm F1.8 Aperture Priority, No AF-Fine tune) - 100% Crop near the focal point

100% Crop - Leftmost Focal Point, 28mm F1.8

2) Left AF Point LIVEVIEW - 100% Crop neat the focal point (28mm F1.8 Aperture Priority, No AF-Fine tune)

100% Crop - Leftmost Focal Point, 28mm F1.8

Based on what I have seen in internet regarding the Left AF problem, this is not that case.

I have tested this earlier this with 50mm F1.8 lens (at aperture F2.0) and it seems fine there also. However a lot of people commented in internet that Left AF problem is mostly visible on wide angle lenses (anything greater than 50mm lenses, it is not visible).

It looks fine to me.  Looks much better than your last one, it's a keeper.
