Impressive feat of engineering. I think it's a bit too large and heavy for me to want to lug it around, and I can't imagine it'll be cheap.

But if it's sharp it'll be a wonderful companion to the SD1M or top end Bayer APS-C camera.

Cautiously ecstatic

I suggest that we stay cautiously ecstatic.

There is a reason why nobody else has tried to do this before. Of course Sigma needs to be applauded for trying to go where no lens maker has gone before. But don't count your chickens before they are hatched.

We know that Sigma is very dedicated to make every Art lens exceptional (the 35mm f/1.4 is a real blast!) but we have not yet seen this lens in action (although the MTF looks terrific: http://sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/art/a_18_35_18/data.html).

Let's wait for the tests... but Sigma sure seems aggressive (in a very positive way) lately.

Re: Sigma announces 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art !

It would be wonderful to get a peek at the decision-making process that went into offering this lens, especially with respect to the demand for a zoom of this speed and focal range.  Having the ability to shoot at f1.8 will offer creativity unavailable with slower zooms.   For the lens to even begin to be successful, they need to have it sharp at f1.8 across the focal range, especially at the longer lengths.  It will be heavy and pricey.  It is good though to see Sigma breaking new ground instead of just following Canon and Nikon.  If it is good, it may change people's perceptions about zooms and speeds.

Fantastic news! And a new blog post on the 18-35 mm f1.8 "A"

Great news from Sigma! Finally APS-C users have a tool that is (on paper at least) not only equal, but BETTER than any FF lens available offering the same FOV. While we'll have to wait and see how the lens performs, it is an incredible engineering achievement on one end, and a very welcome creative tool in the bag on the other end...

Following the new announcement, I posted an article on my blog with my reflections on the lens and what it means to APS-C and full-frame users.

See the article HERE .

Hope you'll find it interesting, best

The SD1 NEEDS this lens

The SD1 NEEDS this lens, the DPs are making a monkey of it .....

also as Sigma are awful at making full frame standard zooms , this will give them a niche sell to pro D7000/7D users as well as the Sony SLT brigade to challenge fullframe 28-70 F2.8 performance (hopefully) and tempt people to stick with APS.

Re: The SD1 NEEDS this lens

I am pleasantly surprised by this.  I have an SD1M with the  8-16, DP1M & DP2M, the 35 1.4, 50 2.8 & 70.  And I have always wanted something to cover the SLR between 16 & 35mm.

Looks like I have got my wish.  I will try it before I buy it after the debacle I had with the late 17-50 zoom, but if the quality approaches my 35 1.5 lens - I will be thrilled.

I think even Canon or nikon making a zoom of that quality is a pipedream let alone Sigma but if it gets even halfway there it`ll be miraculous

Re: Sigma announces 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art !

Once again my breath is baited.

I used to shoot weddings with a 17-35 f2.8 Nikkor lens and it was pretty much the ideal focal length. An f1.8 with a similar focal range - and hopefully as sharp as the Nikon lens - would be worth the asking price, so long as it's not too insanely high. Right now I am almost satisfied with my old 18-50 f2.8 EX DC Macro, but it's a little flaky at around f5.0 and wide open.

Can a DP zoom be far behind?

Sure it won't have F1.8 but I would settle for a small 28-90 F3.5-F5.6 lens on a DP camera. For daylight landscapes, that would hit the spot.

Will it replace both DP1M and DP2M

i.e, as far as optical quality at F2.8 is concerned?

My 17-70mm achieves near DPM level of performance but only at 30-40 when stopped down to F8. So I need to bring both DP2M and SD1M when going out for landscape and still want a DP1M. But if the new 18/35 1.8 Art zoom matches DPM lens optically, I'll just need a SD1M with  2 or 3 lenses.

Under Picture 3 - Comment to the right reads " there is a hint of sticktion"  should this be "friction"?
