Just a quick update, I picked up D7100 with 70-300 and been taking  pictures around the house. Really like the solid feel and grip of the camera. Also, camera (with 70-300 mounted) is not as big as I had expected, especially compared to my GH3 with 100-300mm mounted.

On the IQ, the story is not that great (so far). Granted, I have only used the slow lens..... I am very disappointed with the amount of noise in the pictures. When compared with GH3 + 100-300 mm (nothing scientific), GH3 seems to be producing a lot cleaner JPGs out of the camera than D7100.

Oh well, I will try it out for few days and if I am still disappointed then I will return it and either get D5200 or just go back to m4/3.

That shouldn't be. If you are shooting JPEG's with the D7100 you get the best results shooting Large Fine JPEG's. If you are getting too much noise try setting the Noise Reduction to High. If they have similar settings the D7100 should have less noise than the GH3.

Yes, I am shooting JPEGs with Large Fine setting but Noise reduction turned off and sharpness turned to +3. I will try reducing the sharpness and increasing the noise reduction (though I want to achieve the best sharpness so that I can compare the advantage of D7100 against GH3 )

Since right now a lot of retailers are offering instant rebates on lenses, when purchased with a body I am thinking about getting D7100. The only issue is that I cannot decide what lens should I get, whether 18-200 or 70-300. I know that they are totally different lenses but I am only interested in finding out what is the better value for money and which one will provide better IQ with D7100.

I believe there is $250 rebate on 18-200 and $200 rebate on 70-300 VR. Rebate is valid till April 27.

The 55-300 is better than the 18-200, if you want value for money that would be a great option.

It's not better if you need under 55mm.

Then the 70-300 that the op referenced would be even worse.

Did you even read the original post?

Speaking of reading the original post, I didn't see where the OP referenced the 55-300 as one of his choices.  If I was buying *one* lens, it would certainly be the 18-200 over the 70-300 (or 55-300).

It was a suggestion.

So would I.

I guess I interpreted the op's mention of "I know they're not comparable but" to mean that he was interested in the performance over the overlapping range.

For straight image quality, even the 55-300vr will give him better results over the 18-200 (and a good deal more reach), hence my suggestion.

I assume he already has another wide angle option.

I probably shouldn't put in my 2 cents worth because you guys have more experience than me, going on 3 years with my D5000.

But if was going to buy the 18-200 (which I have BTW) I wouldn't bother getting the D7100. I love my 18-200 and it lives on my D5000. I am saving my Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and my Nikon 70-300 VR for my D7100 when I get it sometime later this year.

As I mentioned in my post earlier (few posts above). I ended up getting D7100 with 70-300 and now running it through it paces. For now, I am not very convinced that I'm getting any better IQ than my GH3....but then again, I am still trying to learn this camera (before my 30 days return period is up)

Good lord.  How can you give advice about noise when you haven't even seen a smaple with EXIF data, to see how the OP is shooting?

I said that with similar settings the D7100 should produce less noise than a GH3. The key words are, "with similar settings".  According to the tests that I've seen, that's true.

I had read that, was more replying to the idea of pairing the 18-200 with the D7100 than I was your original post. To me it's kind of like buying a sports car and putting cheap tires on it.

Re: 18-200 or 70-300 VR with D7100?

Not really meaning to trash the 18-200.  After all, I have it and use it on my D5000. And, honestly, not sure I can really see that much difference in performance between it and the 70-300 on my D5000.

Instead of cheap tires I should have said like putting all-season radials on a sports car. You get greater flexibility and usefulness in a broader range of situations, but at the cost of ultimate performance. I just believe if you are going to pop for the top of the line DX camera (and I know there is some debate on whether the D7100 is the top DX) you should match it with the best lenses you can afford.

Honestly, if I didn't aready have the 70-300 I would pass on both and go for the 70-200 f4

70-400 might be a good option but firstly, i need more reach and secondly the reason why I was comparing 18-200 and 70-300 was that they are the only ones that have a rebate (when purchasing a camera).

The 18-200 is a good lens with a very good range covering the needs of most situations. Happypoppeye used to post a lot of pictures here taken with that lens.  Here is one such post:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/33271004

If you look at his Pbase site, you will find galleries of which the photos were shot mainly with the 18-200:

http://www.pbase.com/happypoppeye/root

I have the 70-300 VR, and the quality is great, but I use my 18-200 far more often, as it covers most of the range I need most of the time for general shooting.  I use other lenses, as well (35mm, 50mm, 90mm macro), when neither the 18-200, nor the 70-300 are suited to a particular task.
