Finally bought a K5 and joined 2011, already in progress...

Can't wait, wll be here early next week. It will be quite an upgrade from my *ist D I'm sure. Got the Adorama deal with the two weather sealed lenses for $899.99. The only drag is I'm so excited about it, now I can't sleep...

Got the 27" iMac quad core i7, an Epson R3000 large format printer, Adobe CS 6, and now this...GREAT photo setup.

Still humming and hawing about selling off my HEAVY FA*'s and going all in on APS-C...if Pentax's next camera is like a 24 meg APS-C, I think I will. I'f it's a full frame, I probably won't. I don't know, I LOVE these lenses, just hate the weight.

Thanks,
Cameron

Congratulations

Welcome to K5 series. I may suggest while those FA*s are excellent lenses, any high res FFs may need more modern FF lenses like DFA* which is optimized for digital FFs.

The DFA lenses have optical formulae very similar to the FA versions.

Hi Joe,

I think high grade lenses for High MP digital FFs need some optimizations like different coating or more ED elements or so and if you want to use the full potential of these new cams you must used better lenses.

Soheil

Yeah. I'd certainly hold onto those FA* lenses and see not only how well they work with your K-5, but also how well they may work when and if Pentax comes out with a FF camera. My 90s era 135mm F2.8 (I call it DFA, but I don't really know, for sure, except that I can set it to "A" and it works fine with my K-5's auto-aperture settings and AF), was certainly made for a FF camera (I used it with a PZ1, at the time. But it takes flawless pics on the K-5, as well. It was the sharpest lens I had back then. I can't necessarily say that now, but it's still a keeper.

Hi Jeff,

There is no Pentax-DFA 135mm f2.8 lens.

There was a Pentax-F 135mm f2.8 that was produced from 1987-1991. It clearly has Pentax-F written along the side and has 135 in red letters.

There was a Pentax-FA 135mm f2.8 that was produced from 1991-2000. This one is probably the one that you have.

Cheers.

BTW, Cameron, I still have the FA* 300 F4.5 that you found for me in the Vancouver shop. I'll always remember how gracious you were to find it for me.

I know there's a DA* 300 F4, but I don't trust SDM. So I keep that FA* 300 F4.5.

Yes, Pentax applied new, digital coatings to the DFA lenses. They also made one optical change to the DFA 50 because of a ghosting problem. Otherwise the optical formulae are very similar to the FA lenses.

Somewhere in the dpreview archives there are posts showing the optical formulae. I don't know where they are, but they were posted sometime soon after the DFA lenses came out. That was in 2004.

I still use my FA 100 F2.8 Macro and FA* 200 F4 Macro, with excellent results on my K5.

NP, Joe, we've been online friends since BEFORE there were Pentax Digital cameras...I THINK they've got SDM sorted out now, and the new lenses are SO much smaller, and weatherproof, which would actually be amazing here on the wet coast. I rains 200+ days a year here, easily.

I actually can't SLEEP right now I'm so pumped...

Thanks,
Cameron

No, brand new from Adorama...amazing deal, considering this camera came out at $1700.00, and the lenses cost over $500.00 up here...so, from $2200.00 down to $900.00.

http://www.adorama.com/IPXK51855B.html?utm_term=Other&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=rflaid65093

Getting that camera for $400.00, I'd say it was a pretty good deal, but...

WHY, OH, WHY DIDN'T I SPRING THE EXTRA $30.00 FOR EXPEDITED SHIPPING???!!! WHAT AN IDIOT I AM!!! THIS IS KILLING ME!!!

Thanks,
Cameron

Re: K5 still holds its own with 2013 cams

Mine is nearing its second birthday and still heavily used.  Grab firmware update to 1.14 (or latest) for the latest improvements.  LR 4.4 provides fine support for K5 raw files and the camera is one of the few I know of that will also write DNG raw files.  I like that your also planning the hardware for post support.  Welcome to the series.

Like I said, Ron, I wasn't sure exactly WHAT the "letters" associated with the lens are. It must be the FA. I assume that's what the 50 F1.4 is, as well, if it's the same lens I bought around the same time -- sure LOOKS like the same lens.

All these letter designations can cornfusle me sometimes. Thanks for the clarification.

Not planning, that's what I already have. The camera was the last thing to upgrade. It was trucking it's way across the states, in Hodgkins, Illinois today...
