I have had the 24-105L for about six years now and love it, it's on my camera 90% of the time & that is a crop 600D now, I find mine very sharp even wide open & the IS is a god send.

I would recommend it.

I currently own a EOS 450d. I own a Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 Pro DX II Lens, canon standard 18-55mm f5.6 and 50mm f1.8. I have looked into EF24-105mm, though there are pretty good reviews, quite a number recommend EF24-70mm  instead. Please advise!

Unless you plan on moving to a full frame body soon, I'd say get the 17-55 f/2.8 instead.

If you are dead set on getting either the 24-105 or the 24-70II, all I can say is I think the 24-70II is a phenominal lens. I never felt that way about the 24-105. I thought it was more like an "adequate" lens.

Of course, it is possible to take good or bad pictures with either lens.

Just noticed how old this thread is. I actually already commented in the thread a month ago. I think it is safe to assume the OP has already decided what to do.

Re: Advise on EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM and EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM

I have BOTH. The 24-70 2.8II focuses faster. Both lenses are DEADLY sharp wide open. The 24-105 F4 is 95% as sharp, BUT only at 50-70MM. At 24MM, it has some issues. I need 2.8, and DEADLY fast AF, so I use the 24-70 for weddings, and the 24-105 for hiking (esp since it has IS)

For landscapes, I use the 24-70 2.8II since it is as sharp (to my eyes) as the primes in that range once you get to F4-5.6.

Amazing lens, and PAINFULLY expensive!

Unless you are upgrading to a FF body, 6d/5d3...purchase any of these theses are not wise.
