I don't agree with that. Depends what you like to shoot.

As a landscape photographer, real estate photographer and a portrait photographer on a full frame camera, this wouldn't be my first, second or third choice for a prime lens, sorry.

Is it a nice lens, yes it is. But for me, since I don't use 50mm that much, buy the nifty 50 (f1.8) and save the cash for another lens that is more useful.

The Canon 50mm f1.4 USM is a great lens . . . until the autofocus mechanism fails (for no reason and with no warning).  If canon should ever put out a 50mm f1.4 USM II lens with much better autofocus build, I'll probably get it.

My state of confusion has turned into a circle of confusion.

I will agree. I had two of the 50 1.8 II's, they took okay pics but were slow and noisy. This is my go to lens on my 6D for indoor stuff. It's fantastic in low light. Having much more fun with it than any lens I've owned yet.

I have the 40 2.8 and don't find it fast enough for low light stuff.  Also have the 85 1.8, it's great but a bit long indoors.

As others have said, it depends on the focal lenght you need to use, or are comfortable using. For me, 50mm is flexible enough focal length (as is 35mm). So I normally have a 50mm lens with me. These days, it is not a Canon though, but rather the Zeiss 50 f/1.4 ZE. I much prefer shooting with the manual focus Zeiss, it just handles beautifully, and the results are top quality.

Um, no

I'm not likely to be one who "must buy this lens."
