How to lock 70-300L @300mm ?

This lens (the 'L' version of the 70-300) has a zoom lock but it only works when competely zoomed out (70mm). When at 300mm it does not work.

How can I lock the zoom when completely zoomed *out* ? Is there a trick for it ?

You can't.  The lock is intended to keep the barrel from extending while you are carrying the lens, not to lock it at any desired focal length.

Are you having a problem with it moving?  Or just accidentally?  or some other reason :).  Mine is tight, and stays at the focal length selected...  but it's only about 1.5 years old.....

Electrical Tape?

If it's really important then I would simply wrap some electrical tape around the lens barrel.

Electrical tape will leave gummy residue.  Gaffer tape can be removed cleanly.

A rubber band (or the commercial Lens Band product) can add extra tension to a zoom ring that slips.

There is no way to lock it at 300mm, the lock is design for transporting the lens only, so that the zoom will drop if you have the camera pointing down.
