Are they reliable? Or is this a case of ' if it sounds too good to be true...look out!'

I seem to recall ads for 42nd St many (like > 30) years ago.  The NYC vendors have a mixed record.  I don't have much more to offer.

I do not see them here:

Not sure if the can really offer USA warranty on Nikon products.

I wonder?

If Amazon uses them as one of their sources might be okay.

Some NYC operations are a bit like chameleons, changing their name for whatever reason.

According to the NYC BBB this Co has operated under these names:

Alternate Business Names

378 5th Photo Corp

42nd Street Photo (NY)

47 St. Audio & Photo

Ahava Inc.

Emunah Inc.

Forty Second Street Photo

Forty-second Street Photo

Picolino

Yikes! Thanks...

That can't be good. Sounds like businesses in HK and mainland China.

If I were you, I'd call NikonUSA at 1-800-Nikon-US and ask a representative if 42nd Street Photo.com is an authorized NikonUSA dealer.  They should be able to tell you.  Years ago I wanted to purchase a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight and found a seller who was $50 cheaper than everyone else.  People told me this couldn't be true.  I called Nikon, they confirmed that the seller was an authorized dealer.  I bought the item, it came with a NikonUSA warranty and have had many problem-free years of use of this item at a great price.  Also, if you decide to purchase, verify from 42nd Street Photo that the item carries an actual NikonUSA warranty card.  Ask them specifically to confirm a valid NikonUSA warranty and not some third party or international warranty.  Good luck.

It's clear that they are NOT a Nikon Authorized dealer, which means Nikon is NOT going to repair your camera if it needs servicing, if that doesn't concern you purchase the camera from them as save $200, learn how to repair the camera yourself if you end up with one that might need a shutter replaced because of sensor spotting.

The price is nothing extraordinary! The D600 sells for that price in Europe with a 2 year European Nikon warranty.

Europe? I'm in the US.

Hard to believe it would be cheaper in Europe.

But thanks to everyone for your responses!

I bought my Nikon F from them in 1968. Still have it.

That is not true. You do NOT have to purchase a Nikon camera from an "authorized Nikon dealer". If there is a legitimate USA warranty inside the box - and there always is on non-grey market products - then you are fully eligible for USA warranty repair regardless of where you purchased the camera. It's conceivable that a non-authorized reseller is still selling products with a Nikon factory USA warranty, and if that's the case then you should be fine. However, sometimes grey market products are sold "with USA warranty" but it's not a Nikon factory warranty - it's a separate, 3rd party warranty from the reseller or a warranty company. Those you should run away from.

I think what people here are saying is to stick with an authorized reseller, which will minimize your headaches. However, ultimately it comes down to the warranty that's inside the box - not who you bought it from. Your warranty contract is with Nikon, not with your reseller, so the point of sale is irrelevant.

Re: 42nd Street: D600 price $200 less?

About four years ago I ordered a D3x from them after checking to make sure it was in stock and would be shipped within a day or so.  Once they charged the price on my debit card, the camera that was "in stock" suddenly disappeared and became back ordered. They kept my money for about a month, and it wasn't easy to get it back from them either. I wouldn't go near that place again, ever!

Still too many horror stories w/ dust/oil...

I'm beginning to wonder of this D600 mess wasn't just a ploy to get us to upgrade to the D800.

Do I want to head to Greece in Sept knowing that I might come back with a batch of botched files that I may have to spend hours/weeks cloning dust spots from?

Yes, many are clean, but I also read a post here from a guy who's 600 is still throwing dust after 13,000 shots. Some stop doing it after 1-2-3-4 thousand shots. Some start doing it after the same.

What kind of headaches might I end up dealing with? Are they making these bodies in the back of some Bangkok girly bar, or what?
