need to replace my 17-55 with…

I sold my lovely 17-55 because of lot of problem with the autofocus. after 3 years of usage with a 40D before and after with a 7D, my impression is that this lens is great from an optic point of view but not very solid. Probably I was a bit unlucky, so I'm looking for a replacement. any suggestion? Another 17-55 (hoping to be more lucky)?

thanks

I believe both Sigma and Tamron produce lenses with the same or similar focal range and aperture.

Have you sent it to Canon for repair/adjustment?

The 17-55 f2.8 is the main lens on my 7d took over from a 16-35 f2.8 on 10D and 40D.

You can try the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM
1

It has comparable optics, a bit less bulk and weight, costs a bit less, and is a bit better built. Maybe it will give you less problems?

the problem with the lens was tricky. each time that I brought it to the store, it behave perfectly with no signs of this focusing problem. very frustrating...

I have to ask what is the question?  You want to stay with Canon and you want another 17-55.  I think the others assumed that you are looking for an alternative to the Canon 17-55.  When you get a good copy, it is a good lens.  You've read and experienced the problems that some have complained about the Canon....ie, attracts dust, build quality on some....so again what is the question?

24-70 2.8 (Tamron) & 10-22 should have you covered.

Hi,

I owned the 17-55 mm. If you don't intend to upgrade your gear with a FF camera, I would recommend to stay with the 17-55 mm. IMHO, it's probably the best EF-S lens Canon ever made.

you centered the problem. i'm very undecided.

option 1: buy another (crossing fingers) 17-55,

option 2: buy a EF 17-40L or

option 3: buy a EF-S 15-85

still undecided

that's an option, but most of the time I prefer to travel light with only one lens. I think that the 24-70 is perfect with a FF, I have a 7D, and the 17-55 is the equivalent of the 24-70.

I also own a 50/1.4 and a 70-200/f4 IS.

I am curious, what type of AF problems?  Did it work a lot of the time and then inexplicably just focus hunt?  But yet, you could not reproduce it at the store??

I have the 15-85 on my 7D, but am considering the 17-55f/2.8 for indoor low light shots. The 15-85 is a very good lens & I would not sell it as the FR is great for an outdoor carry round lens, but is not too good for indoors in low light when flash is not allowed.

Well sometimes when I try to focus with the autofocus the AF system start to go back and forth continuously and is not able to focus to any point. This in turn prevent the shot. This issue appeared not very frequently. And never with the technician. I tried to clen contacts and to change the body, but with no results.

All excellent lenses. I used to own the 15-85 and it was my main lens for the 650d I had before going FF. If you plan to stay on crop I would still get the 17-55 though, as it is pretty much everybody's favorite EF-S. 17-40L is a good choice (I have that one now) if you plan to move on to FF later. Depending on your preferences it might be a bit limited as a standard lens on crop, but it is a very good lens and a nice wide-angle lens on FF.
