300mm f/4L

Any rumoured update for this lens ? Considering getting one but it was released in 1997 !

Re: 300mm f/4L

Well, I still have my EF 300 F/4L (my first Big White!) bought from a London dealer at a good price when he knew that the IS version had just been announced to Canon Pro dealers.

It served me well until aperture lust set in and I bought an F/2.8L.  My feeling is that it may have been somewhat eclipsed by the EF 70-200 F/4L IS which is surprisingly sharp, more versatile, and easier to carry when being a tourist.  And now there's the 70-300L zoom as well.  Now, my F/4L stays in the cupboard most of the time.

NONE!!

Considering getting one but it was released in 1997 !

"Hey, line forms at the back!" says EF 400 f/5.6L USM (May 1993)

"Yeah! No line cuts, buddy!" in unison from EF 200 f/2.8L II USM and EF 135 f/2L USM (April 1996)

I suppose this lens doesn't sell enough to justify releasing a new version at a higher price.

Good point I have to say that I hope the 200mm f/2.8L II is NOT updated for awhile. This lens is magical and one of Canon's least expensive L lenses. A version 3 would probably double the price for very little improvement.

Re: 300mm f/4L

All they could really do with the 135mm f2 and 200mm f2.8 is stick IS in them. There's a reason why they haven't been updated (Nikon's fantastic 135mm f2 is even older!).

There have been rumors, but those have been around for years. I would love to see an update of the 400/5.6L myself, but if I were serious about buying I wouldn't wait.

I think your best bet is to simply buy the current one. Even if a new one is released this year or the next, the price will be so high that it won't affect the resale value of the old one (maybe even push it up like it did with the 500/4).
