samsung 45mm 1.8 @ nx20 - my 5c

it's almost as light as the 30mm and sharp at wide + good colors and contrast at wide, not much CA. the bokeh is nice and creamy - at f4 almost in the same way as at f1.8.

should be wider like 1.4 or more tele like 50/55mm for my taste - more bokeh would be great. My decision: I guess I'll stay with the 30mm and the manual minolta 50mm 1.4.

its sharp

f1.8

f4

f8

So you won't be keeping it ? I would think portrait would be its main alley, have you tried that ?

Thanks for sharing.  I was looking for exactly the 45mm f/1.8 at the last photo shoot I did, I kept having to crop my 30mm shots, and the 60mm was too telephoto.  Too bad my lens hasn't come in yet

sure it want's to be my portrait lens. as the $$$ 85mm wants. but:

for quick portraits the 30mm is enough and gives me the small package with the "one lens for all feeling" - I do love the 30mm (one reason I'll send back the nex6 to amazon). if I have time I can use the 50mm 1.4 manually.

there is a difference between the 30mm and the 45mm, sure. but I don't think it is worth 300€ for me.

BUT I haven't tried potraits, the lens just is here for a few hours. will do the next days, against the 50mm and share my thoughts on that. and maybe I have to spend money and keep it

Re: samsung 45mm 1.8 @ nx20 - my 5c

For my needs 35 is a strict minimum for portraits, wider is just useless (for me), face distortion and not enough background compression.

I' shooting NEX and the SEL35/1.8 is very good (it's actually the only worthy NEX lens IMO) but I was thinking a tad longer would be brilliant

Based on my experience with the NX 30mm and Minolta 45 f/2 and 50 f/1.4, I imagine the NX45 is way sharper wide open than the 50. Auto focus is nice too, but the NX300's focus peaking should help make those old lenses handier! DoF is shallower than the 30 of course, but not in the same league as your 50....
Thanks for the pics!

Re: samsung 45mm 1.8 @ nx20 - my 5c

I really do think the announcement of the 2d/3d lens was in effect the notice of the cancellation of the 2d only lens though Samsung are never going to say this directly and obviously a few were produced. I am sure they are desperate to push 3d and if they still produced the 2d no one would buy the 3d lens so they will keep the former in short supply even if they produce them.

The politics going on between the divisions in this company must be a joy to behold but I suspect NX has been told to toe the line and push the 3d lost cause.

I do love to follow the virtual world of Samsung NX lenses. It is like a real life adventure weaving between truth and fantasy and you never know which is which. The UK site on the NX page shows 11 lens in a group but on the actual lens page there are only 8 different lenses. Park Cameras have more than this so they have more lenses than Samsung UK know exist. Some of them are the Mk111 versions of the original lens but few seem to know what the difference is.

Edit: I must say Samsung are putting on a good show but it is difficult to see how the user can see ahead though to to be fair I would think Samsung themselves have little idea either.

I imagine they can only produce one at a time, they probably make a batch of 2D, then 2D/3D.  BH Photo in US is still showing both available for pre-order.

Time will tell. I hope you do get the lens but I am afraid my British cynicism tells me otherwise. Making the 2 types just does not make sense if the 3d lens can operate 2d.

Best of luck.

may I ask which 58 version you use? My 58 is the old metal all around version and much heavier and more difficult to handle compared to the 50mm (so the 50 is still my fav)

I tried the 50mm 1.2 a few days but it was just heavier and $$$. A lot. And a bit sharper at f2, but not any better at wide. The legend 58 1.2 is to $$$ for me, I would go for the Samyang 85 1.4 again (great performance at wide!) if I should invest in a manual again.

If the 35mm 1.8 was a small pancake... but heard it's nice, never tried it myself. I like the 35mm 1.7 cctv on the NEX so I can imagine that the SEL is fun to use, the same with AF and HQ

The 45mm is SHARP at wide. Nothing compared to the soft and bleeding old lenses. But I don't know about f 2.8  yet. The 6 aperture blades are a  disadvantage of the 50mm and I guess the bokeh can't compete at f4

will let you know

The SEL50/1.8 is biggish, slow poke AF and boring. I mean by that it's optically excellent, but not sexy (clean, flat image, smooth bokeh, good colors. Meh. I guess it's actually many people's idea of a perfect lens, but I like my like a little bumpier and with some surprise). It's ugly and really slow at AF so I didn't keep it as my various legacy nifties do much better.

The SEL35/1.8, however, is a totally different animal. It's pretty short, black, sleek looking. AF speed is more than acceptable (once you've adapted to general NEX af performance), except in very dim light where it borders on useless (I've switched to MF long before then). Optically it's just *fantastic*. Sharp, nice color and contrast, and built-in character like if it were a legacy lens. I mean by that the slightest hint of super light vignetting that just renders everything way more interesting.

If it weren't for the lens, I'd had ditched NEX for good.

good to know, thought I was a hater

so if you compare the NEX+35 vs the NX+30 bundle, what is your choice? I can't stand the handling of the NEX cams, still I had the NEX3 with me on my last bike-vacation along with the "belt-cam" (Canon S95) and was glad for the GREAT panorama-shots achieved with it.

I'm just trying the NEX6, but will send it back, don't like the handling of it, compared to the NX20, despite its great performance. Will send back the NX20 though, and stick with the NX1000 until the NX300 has a pricedrop or the NX30 blows my mind. Or the NEX 7n finally let me drop the whole Samsung system. Well that all is not the topic here, sorry ^^

among the 50mm rokkors, the 50/1.4 version seems to be the preferred 50mm in terms of overall rendering, price and size. although the 1.2's seem to get some attraction due to them being faster, the rendering and the insane demand for 1.2's nowadays doesn't make them worth it at all. for the same price that they are selling, might as well get a new Nokton 58mm.

Re: samsung 45mm 1.8 @ nx20 - my 5c

Hey, another Nex user. I tried the Sony DT50/1.8 on my Nex5 and I would agree on the flat image part, I quickly sold the lens. I rather use a zoom with soft image but good rendering. I guess the SEL50 is the same animal. After the DT50, I give up on Sony lens, and got hooked on legacy lens. I guess I can blame Sony for my boxes of legacy lens.

It seems the SEL35 is a different animal, it is also interesting that it is one of the very few lens with a concave front element.

The only NX i had a chance to try was the 200, with 18-55 zoom. The lens sample I had was very bad, horrible plastic feeling an a definite hard/sticking point in zooming ring around 50mm. I did like the camera, controls and menus quite a bit, but the NEX 7 wipes the floor with the IQ.

I'm convinced assessing it with a prime would have been a different story, and i'll be curious to deal more with NX in the future, but for now the noise performance was just really lagging behind competition, including non APS-C. My GX-1 is way cleaner than that. Let's see if the NX300 fixes this. I hope it does because features wise it offers 99% of what I want/need.

BTW the 7 is the only NEX I'm totally happy with, the TriNavi controls make a night and day difference in handling vs every single other body (I've had a bunch : 5N, 6, C3, and 2 units of the 7).

ive been on cyprus with the nx11, 16mm, 30mm and 85mm, i also put the 50-200mm in my luggage-hold case. The 85mm weighs an absolute ton, and doesnt like focusing at great disances, so i have substituted it (in my 3 lens bag) for the 50-200mm.

My only wish is that the new 45mm was a 55mm lens, it would have been so convenient to have a 16, 30, 55mm setup. As it is now i have to carry a hulking great lens for a short tele, which i dont really want to do.

Re: samsung 45mm 1.8 @ nx20 - my 5c

i would just add that the 85mm is an amazing lens, for short-medium range auto focusing it is a beauty, i have got so many amazzing shots with it, it is a gem.

it is not a short tele for "small camera bag" travel purposes though, it hates auto focusing at distance (its main problem), and weighs a ton, which just serves to rub salt in the wound if you're lugging it about in the hope it will serve as a longer distane tele.
