80-400 AF-S

Received one yesterday and took it for a short 5 minutes out in the backyard. Very cloudy. Here is a sample image. Seems to be sharp, fast autofocus and lighter then expected.

Congrats on the new lens.

It looks good from your sample and a couple of others I have seen.

Share some more when you get a chance.

If careful the D-7100 and new 80-400 SHOULD be a great moderately priced bird/wildlife combo except for very low light conditions.  Be sure to post your opinion and images HERE.

Re: 80-400 AF-S

If I'm not mistaking on a D7100 in 1.3 crop mode the 400 becomes 780????

D800 equivalent crop

While it does become 780mm equiv with the 1.3 crop of D7100 - you can achieve a similar crop yourself with your D800 (without the D7100 advantage of metering/focussing using only the 1.3x cropped part - and of course the MP advantage with D7100) by doing a 1.5x crop and then manually doing the 1.3x crop in post process. I assume in such a case you would get a little under 10MP with D800 (not too shabby) - calculation based on the following:

D7100 ~ 24 MP; D7100 1.3x cop ~ 15 MP - so a ratio of 5:8 from the DX area

D800 = 15.4 MP in DX crop OR ~ 16 MP - applying the 5:8 ratio the 1.3x crop on top of DX crop ~ 10 MP. 10 MP should be acceptable for a crop and not a whole lot worse than 15 MP from the D7100 1.3x crop - and same as the Nikon V1.

Re: 80-400 AF-S

The bokeh looks good in this picture compared to some of the earlier pictures posted by others - so I guess there is a good hope (I will get mine on Thursday from B&H - and will use it on my D800).

I found bokeh ok at 400mm. Not so great any other range.

400 mm will always be 400 mm. The so called 1.3x crop was called 2x crop in the D2X camera.

In the D7100 it is exactly a 2x crop from FX at 15.36 Mpix. Thus a 400 mm will have the same field of view as a 800 mm on FX. (Remember that the DX in D7100 is a 1.53 - 1.54 crop from FX.)

A similar crop from D800 will yield 9.04 Mpix.

And are these 100% pixel crops from your D800?

Any special post processing (e.g. noise reduction)?

Brown Creepers are very small and incredibly hard to get focus on.

Very nice with nice feather detail.

Is it possible to upload the original somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Kindest regards.
