Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ4 review

I'm using this baby about two months now, made some 1000+ pics.

Construction is good, camera feels and operates solidly. Still, Mega O.I.S. components shakes and rattles during ordinary walk, let alone jog, even if camera is powered down.

Feature set is ok, but no RAW. Has manual mode, but limits exposure time, if not in M, so difficult to use tripod with Program mode in low light. Max exposure time, even in M mode is only 8 sec, probably to cover up noisy CCD.

Image quality ok at lower ISO settings, but with way overprocessed watercolor look, and still much noisier at higher ISOs, with decent amount of colour fringing. During low light even Natural mode ( Picture adjustment ) might not save the day ( night? ). Macro is solid, and close enough, but too much barrel distortion for my taste.

Ease of use wise, I deducted half a point because of design, while clean and logical at first sight, in actual use upper row of buttons ( Evf/Lcd, Display, Exposure ) are not so easily accesible, plus all the buttons are way too small. Combine that with demand to formidable push any button to activate. Hand grip on right side is also way too small, there is no wrist band, plus there is too little space between lens barrel and grip.

Still, its very good camera, solidly built, won't crack like that, optical stabilisation really worth its hype, have really long zoom, relatively fast apertures, speedy, focus speed excelent ( but may miss occasionally ), adjustable Evf ( Canons don't have it, not even G6! ), mode button large enough and won't change by accident, manual button to raise flash ( soooo fuch better than automatic on Fuji S5600 ), ...

Though not perfect, it's quite a nice little camera.

None so far.
