hands-on review of the D7100
23

Got the D7100 yesterday.  Had a chance to take some shots.  Here is my partial review: http://betterfamilyphotos.blogspot.com/2013/03/nikon-d7100-hands-on-real-world-review.html

Some highlights:

The D7100 does have the option to change the effect of exposure compensation on flash exposure, just like the D4 and D600.

In live view, the OK button can be customized to zoom 100% instead of resetting the AF point.

Shadow recovery does show horizontal pattern noise at extreme settings >+3.5EV.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Best regards,

Mic

Enjoyed your straight forward review of the D7100.

You go right to the point without apologizing for the manufacturer.

Looking forward to part 2.

Sincere thanks.  I get mine March 19.

One of the best (if not THE best) user reviews I've ever read! Clear, concise, to the point, interesting content, meticulous, fluent  expressive style and language. Certainly makes the reader feel the time spent reading it was worthwhile. I look forward to more..

WELL DONE and THANK YOU

are you saying the D7100 allows me to disconnect the overriding EC between the body to the flash ?   that I can set the flash ec independently ...and the body will not override my input like the D7000 always does ???

If so, then you just made my day !!

Is this by chance noticeable with ADL at extra-high in lifted shadows?

Then the D7000 is better when lifting shadows heavily?

Nice review btw!

Read the review...thank you !!   My question...so I can adjust my body ambient exposure...and then dial in (adjust/ec) the flash so that 2/3 of the light comes from ambient, and 1/3 from flash ??  That's what I did w Canon in my wedding work.  Thx for your answer.

J.

Not sure if he had ADL on but I've seen the same degree of banding with D5200/D7100 images with ADL off. Yes, this represents a step backwards from the D7000/D5100.

Yes!!!  You decide whether changing the exposure compensation affects flash exposure!

I would agree that the D7000 is better for massive shadow lifting, but would take the tradeoff for much higher res and better mids for sure, not to mention all the other upgrades.  Not too many times I would ever go more than 2 stops or even that far pullling shadows.
