Xsi (450D) still gets a work out...

I own three DSLR's, 300D, 450D and 5D 2; for travel I usually take my Xsi (450D) as my P&S.  I likes its small footprint, especially when I use the Canon 35mm f2 lens.  I am linking my slide show of a cruise to show even an older camera can still perform.  It would be nice to have a bit higher ISO like I do with my 5D 2, so some pics on very large screens won't hold up.  All pics were hand held.

Enjoy:

Re: Xsi (450D) still gets a work out...

Very nice shots. I still have my XSi, which I bought as soon as they were available, because it's so good and the modest improvements in image quality in later models aren't worth the money to me. If I need ISO higher than 1600, I set the camera to ISO 1600 and shoot with the f stop and shutter speed I need to get the photo, then convert the RAW file in DxO which I find gives me better "pushed" results than Canon's DPP.

This is from my XSi at an effective ISO 12,800 (ISO 1600 underexposed 3 stops), RAW file converted in DxO.

I have an XTi as my travel camera. I have no qualms with taking it instead of my 7D. I like the smaller size and lighter weight. I have 400+ software installed on it which makes pre-A/D ISO 3200 available. Even at the higher ISOs any noise is easily handled in the latest version of Canon Digital Photo Professional.

The Rebel line is an amazing value, and make excellent travel cameras.

Can you elaborate on this software?  Sorry but a 400+ google search just brings up too many non-relevant hits.  Will it work on a 450d?

400plus is for the 400D only, and Magic Lantern supports the 500D and above. It doesn't look like the effort to port 400plus to the 450D went anywhere.

Here's the link to 400plus, in case anyone else is interested:

But, again, it's for the 400D only.

Thanks - shame.  Higher ISO performance would be the main driver behind changing from my 450d.  Looks like I need to start saving for 650d or 7D.

Bill, some great shots but....

You take wonderful images but I notice almost all of them are in well lit situations, so I'm wondering if higher ISO would help.  I do know I need higher ISO to control shutter speed for subject movement.

To those thinking of upgrading

My trusty 450D/XSi died last year after about 50k actuations and I bought a T3i.  If you own the XSi, I would suggest you postpone upgrading.  I did notice a bit of improvement with the 18 versus 12 megapixels, but that was about it.  I don't use video and have not needed to use the swivel lcd screen.  Focusing was not improved.  In fact my XSi focused better with the 60 macro lens.  I can't use AF for macro shots with the T3i.  The T3i is supposed to have less noise at higher ISOs.  I don't notice that improvement.  Perhaps if I could do a comparison with my old XSi, I would see some improvement.

Re: To those thinking of upgrading

I have been using 450D for the past three years and absolutely love this camera.  Over the past few months I thought about upgrading to 600D, mainly due to the price drop and 18 megapixel sensor. I don't use video and never missed screen.  I hardly shoot above 800 iso. After reading your post I am glad I didn't go ahead.

I had expected that the T4i/650d would be the change to make in that range from what I've read here.

Re: Bill, some great shots but....

Thank you. I do use high ISO quite a bit although I try to avoid it when possible. I don't always post the results but below are some that I did post. I looked at the T2i and it did have better high ISO performance but not enough to make me want to upgrade. I find ISO 1600 very usable if exposed properly and not printing larger than 8x10. I'm really hoping the 70D has the rumored new sensor technology from Canon. That would probably make me upgrade.

Re: To those thinking of upgrading

I had a similar experience when I had a T2i for 30 days, along with my XSi, before I returned it. I did some careful tests of fine detail (low ISO) and high  ISO. I found  that the T2i had a bit more fine detail and gained about 1/2 f-stop at high ISO (all shooting RAW). That wasn't enough improvement for me to spend the money. I still feel the same way about the T4i.

Great cruise pictures rsn48.  Especially the St Thomas pics.  Makes me want to book that next cruise.  I think maybe I'll stay away from Carnival this time, tho

All kidding aside, I've been on 7 cruises, 6 on Carnival, and they've all been pretty nice.  I hope Carnival gets it together.

Thanks for the slide show cruise to these cool places, RSN. It's probably the only way I'll get to this part of the world. I especially liked the various street scenes--day and night. Nice photos, and I'm sure great memories for you guys.

While I haven't used it for a while, I'm keeping the trusty 450D as a backup. It is still a very worthy camera. It's also going to come in handy for our grandaughter who will be taking a Boys and Girls Club photography workshop.
