Wide angle , fast lens for Sony alpha. Any suggestion ?

Hi everyone :

Does anyone in this forum has any suggestion  for a wide  24 or 28 mm  fast ( f2 ) ,  lens for alpha DSLR ?

Months ago I bought the  dt 50 mm f1.8 ..., but I do not enjoy much the lens.

It is not wide enough. In order to get a shot I must be relatively far away from the subject.  Besides.., forget wide angle indoor pictures .  The lens cant do it !!!!

Thanks in advance for your input.

PS: The sony nex has the newly released f1.8 , 24 mm lens . People say it is quite good.

You would get more focused responses if you mentioned whether you were using full frame or APS-C and what your budget is.

The Carl Zeiss lenses in the Sony range and the G ones are generally the very best, but there are some very good budget ones as well such as the Sony 35mm 1.8 DT  SAM. And then there is all that legacy glass from Minolta, not to mention glass from Tokina, Sigma and Tamron.

Sony 35mm f/1.8 is a better general purpose lens than 50mm f/1.8 due to it having a wider FoV whereas the latter is more suited for portraits and open spaces, or if you need more reach. They are two of the excellent trio (the last being 85mm f/2.8, which I believe is based on Zeiss Sonnar design and is a full frame lens).

If you don't mind spending more (which you have to, for the FoV coupled with large aperture), Sony-Zeiss 24mm f/2 is your option.

Peter,

From what you said, I'm guessing you're using an APS-C camera like the A55, A57, A65, A77, etc. (or maybe A580, 550, 500, 100, etc.).

On an APS-C sensor camera, 50mm is not a wide-angle lens, it's not even a "normal" field of view: it's a "near telephoto".

If you're looking for a lens with a normal (little bit wide, but not TOO wide) field of view for an APS-C camera, you will to get something like a 28, 30 or 35mm. There are inexpensive but remarkably good, fast lenses for the 30mm and 35mm focal lengths.

They're great bargains. I've owned 'em both.

On your camera (if I'm guessing right about what you have) 28mm will be "wide-ish" rather than "wide". The old Sony 28 f/2.8 is available used from KEH and elsewhere; at least that's where I got mine.

How about the Sigma 24mm f1.8?  I've used it for a long time and it is very sharp, with great IQ.

Here you will find some images I have taken with it: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3392456

Re: Wide angle , fast lens for Sony alpha. Any suggestion ?

Thanks a lot for your helpful answers. I will check all of them.

I have 2 aps-c Sony cameras, both with the same sensor ( Sony A500 and sony a550).

The 550 is brand new. I bought it last december and I have not used it much.

The DT 50 mm , 1.8 is a almost telephoto lens, indeed.

I got it since I saw it recommended in camera labs website but I have found it very frustrating for indoors shooting.

Zeiss 24/2

I have the CZ 24/2, and I can't say enough good things about it (except i wish is was not so expensive). I use it on my crop sensor a77-- but I can't wait to get the a99 (or a101 or whatever the 50Mp square sensor successor will be called).

Sigma has some inexpensive wide f/1.8 lenses, I don't own one but I have read mixed reviews on them. If "fast" allows for f/2.8, the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 is supposed to be pretty good (another lens I do not own). For crop sensors, the Sony 16-50/2.8 is pretty wide, a good build, and fast AF.
