NX200 DR

In may I'll be spending a couple of days in Paris with my son. I want the emphasis to be on our time together and not on photography so I've almost decided to leave my 5DII at home. I'm thinking of bringing my NX11 + 30mm, but I've never been totally convinced by the IQ that the NX11 offers. Especially the limited DR worries me. If I look at the numbers at DXOMark the DR of the NX200 looks like a real improvement but if I look at the review here the DR still seems quite limited.

Has anyone here compared the DR of the NX11 vs NX200? Is there a real improvement? (I'm shooting RAW btw).

Re: NX200 DR

the nx200 is quite a lot better. Its hard to quantify how much better, but personally i was never very happy past iso800 on the nx10/100 but the nx200 my im good at 1600.

But the images are a bit more refined on the nx200 where the nx10 was more punchy. if that makes any sense.

I had the NX100 for a short time (a long time actually, during which it was mostly in the repair centre.  Anyway...) and the NX200 definitely has a wider dynamic range, but there is something to watch out for: when you try to take the shadows and bring them up at all, because there is a colour cast that depends on the lens - there are several threads on this.  Bring up the shadows just a little and it's just an extremely slight, almost imperceptible colour cast.  Bring them up a lot and it is obvious.  I haven't noticed anyone reporting this issue on the NX1000, NX210 or NX20.  And of course the NX300 is coming out with yet again another sensor (if only to add phase autofocus sensels).

I think the NX200 colour depth and resolution are a nice improvement over the NX100, especially highlighted by the 30mm.  But if I was choosing right now I would definitely get the NX20 or wait.

Re: NX200 DR

Nx200 DR is not bad at all,  even better than NX 210.

Re: NX200 DR

when u talk about DR, i found that decreasing the contrast setting to negative end will help a lot

Re: NX200 DR

When set in low contrast that will be agreed have no full DR.

Thanks Paul. When you're saying that you weren't happy past iso800 on the nx10/100 are you talking about noise or DR?

It's good to hear that the DR is indeed wider on the NX200. Too bad there are problems with bringing up the shadows, but quite frankly my 5DII has some real problems there as well so I've learned to avoid that by exposing to the right. Thanks to the highlight DR of the full frame sensor this is quite doable, but my NX11 would give me much more trouble.

How is the highlight DR of the NX200? How much headroom do the RAW files have?

The NX200 would be my 3rd or 4th camera so I'd like to keep the cost down. The NX200 can be had for very goof prices these days while the NX20 hasn't come down very much...

I can see how that would help when you're shooting jpeg but it shouldn't make a difference in RAW imo. It does make it easier to see how much you'll be able to recover from the RAW file though.

not too much. just be careful because you could easily blow up the highlights. the NX200 is better in the shadows.

the NEX though have better highlight detail recovery.

Re: NX200 DR

I'm quite happy with nx200 highlights (of course they could be better but that's always true). I often shoot with -1/3 exposure correction, though.

These forums are great

I came across Thom Hogan's review of the NX1000 yesterday and it seems he agrees with the 'better than the 14MP but not better than Sony' statment:

"Samsung has upped their game with the sensor. The new 20mp sensor is better than the older 14mp one in almost every respect. While dynamic range doesn't quite match the Sony APS sensors, I was impressed with the strides that Samsung has made, and this is definitely an advantage the APS sensors have over smaller ones.

Noise levels are lower, too. The old 14mp sensor definitely started degrading at high ISO values, even as low as ISO 800. This new sensor handles ISO 800 just fine, and even ISO 3200 is quite usable now. Color fidelity is good, and overall this small, low-end camera is capable of producing some excellent images."

Sounds like an improvement to me

Went from NX10 to NX200, DR improvement is noticeable. Re-posting an ISO 400 RAW file from my earlier thread: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/50130812 and http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/50137366
