Upgrade 17-85 to 17-55 f2.8 ????

looking to treat myself to a new lens and go from  17-85 to 17-55 f2.8

im not worried about the difference in focal length but read the 17-55 has great optics and the obvious f2.8. i shoot weddings with the 17-85 and i am pleased it, but im always looking to improve.

I know it reads a better lens but does anyone have any experience going from one to the other.

cheers

Marcus

I have the 17-55 F2.8 lens , a good all round lens, IMO dosn't do a great job of blurring out the background at F2.8, so, if you aim to use it like that, check that out,  like i said ,thats only my opinion.

You could try the canon lens forum, just a thought.

I went from the 18-55 IS to 17-55 . Love it , but I prefer the DOF to bokeh . You will really like the 17-55 , better and faster focusing [ at least in camera store ]

Best crop lens there is.  And you pay dearly for it. Dust issues are overstated. I had no issues with dust. It is a big heavy for that range but you won't find a sharper EF-S lens. You'll miss out on extended reach but gain f/2.8 (which I shot with 99.9% of the time). Then again, prime lenses can be had cheaper such as the 85 1.8, 50 1.4. But that adds the time to take changes. So I guess what I'm saying is I have no idea what to tell you.
