Samsung NX 20MP APS-C Sensor

Samsung NX20, NX 200, NX210, NX1000 Camera, How do You Like Your Camera?

Fro me I have the NX1000 and evrything is good, except the high miga pixel , 20 MP is too high !

I wish Samsung will reduce the Miga Pixel to 16MP only in the new sensor .

20 MP is hardly different from 16 MP.  Total pixels are only 20% less, and resolution on one edge only about 11% less.  These differences are almost negligible.  Even 16 to 24 MP is not a huge difference.  6 to 12 is noticeable, 12 to 24 is noticeable.  16 to 20 is pretty negligible.

I really like the NX20.  Good performance across the range, even pretty good at high ISO.  I shoot only RAW so have no comment on JPEG performance, but I am happy with the performance from ISO 100 to 3200.

My biggest drawback with the NX20 camera is the performance is a little slower than it could be. Supposedly the new processor in the NX300 (upcoming) is much faster and allows features like focus peaking, etc.  This should help greatly for RAW shooters like myself, if it can move the data to memory card a little faster and not lock out some of the controls when doing so.  I am waiting for an NX30 or equivalent camera.

Re: Samsung NX 20MP APS-C Sensor

you can shoot at smaller sizes in JPG .

if you`re on about noise above ISO1600 , that`s Samsung`s inability to write firmware capable of dealing with chroma noise (the 14Mp sensor is worse at ISO3200 in JPG) , the 20Mp sensor in RAW performs much like the 24Mp one in the NEX7 and reszized down from 20 to 16Mp isn`t far behind the likes of the NEX5N ...... Samsung need to get their act together with Noise reduction

I have no problem with the sensor in my NX210.

It's good through ISO3200, although at ISO1600 and above I get the best results by turning off the in-camera NR and running the JPEG through Noise Ninja.

Apart from the slow write speeds, the only things that really bother me are the greenish cast I get when I use the manual WB, and the brain-dead manual focusing.

I like my NX10, NX100, NX1000.

20MP = very good, my NEX7 has 24 MP That's okay for APS-C

My first digital camera (Olympus 800) had 1024x768 = 0.75 MP, hehe. No memory card, only 6 MByte memory built in. Price was more than € 800 = $ 1050

I thing with less miga pixel the density will be less and the IQ will look better, also the lens will perform better .

Thanks to all how share and comment on this thrid.

Your knowledge is from before 2000 - there are big technical developments/improvements, you compare pears with apples.

Re: Samsung NX 20MP APS-C Sensor

moving from the nx100 to nx200 i notice how dirty the 1:1 view is, sure there is extra detail but i think they pushed the mpx count a bit too far.

16-18 does seem to be the limit on current aps-c where it can be avoided.

it's more tedious considering the files are larger which takes long to process. I am also hopeful that the processor upgrade would solve that performance issue with processing and shutter lag. other than that, the lenses and the sensor are pretty much alright at 20MP.

you can always downsize it to 16mp. also, what Samsung needs is to improve it's NR, algorithms and upgrade it's A/D converters and heat dissipators to improve noise handling.

With proper noise reduction technique, the higher MP sensor can actually perform better in theory [1], in practice probably the same. The trade off is increased storage demands and processing time.

Too often people look at the pixel level, which is important, but more important is the overall image level which people forget to look at.  When you have a 24 MP sensor and are looking at the pixel level, you are zoomed in twice as much as a 6 MP sensor at the pixel level.  I.e. you are enlarging more (basically like a smaller sensor camera) and will see more defects.  You really need to resize the outputs to the same pixel dimensions to compare at the pixel level.

I wish the compare tool here had two options, one at pixel level, and the other at some fixed size like 12 MP or something, where the output would be smartly resized on all images to match.

Great idea that of a common Mp base for pixel comparisons!

Ps. First part brought to my mind the concept of fractals

There`s absoutely Nothing wrong whatsoever at pixel level with the 20Mp sensor in Raw up to 1600
