Pentax MG lens use on Pentax K-r?

First time poster and been over 20 years since I've used an SLR.

I have an old 1980's Pentax MG with unknown (maybe Tamron) telephoto lens and have tried placing it on the new(ish) K-r and while it appears to physically fit, doesn't seem to be just point and click in that pressing the shutter does not take a photo.

Is there some setting required to use the old lens on the newer digital camera?

In the menu somewhere there is a setting for "Using Aperture Ring". Make that setting equal to 2 and then leave it there from now on. It has no afect on any other lenses.

If you lens as an A position then set that lens to the A position.

Cheers.

Set the camera for manual mode and try. you may be able to take a picture .( And depress the shutter firmly). Good luck.

Thank you Ron.

I set the lens to 'A' and that allowed pictures to be taken.

With your answer, was it do either or should I also set the Aperture Ring to 2?

The Aperture Ring = 2 setting has no affect on any lenses except for lenses without an A setting and M42 screwmount lenses.

You set the Aperture Ring to 2 for use with lenses that do not have an A setting. I set all of my Pentax DSLR's to Aperture Ring Setting equal 2 and never look at it again.
