Like many others, the price and size made the 40mm lens a simple buy for the 600D. The more I use it, the more the 64mm equivilent is growing on me...

Very nice captures for such high ISO.

Thanks. Given that a mono/tripod would have been inappropriate for the venue, I just took my losses and switched to B+W so I could hand-hold everything without concern. Faster glass would probably have let me choose a more reasonable ISO. Any suggestions for a better way to handle such poor lighting with the 40mm?

B+W is very fitting for a jazz show!

I think you chose wisely.  Personally I never hesitate to use high ISO to get successful results.

Wow those are fantastic. I never thought to shoot directly b&w but it handles the higher iso so well. Thank you for sharing!

Haha oh yes it's fun to be a madman at times! Frustrated with the light? Just switch to in-camera monochrome with no RAW safety net:) I definitely can't say I'm the smartest photographer, but sometimes creativity and humor can win you a shot.

Also, I met the band and they liked these free ones enough to let me shoot them in the studio next week. Funny how these things happen, eh?
