Take a drill and a deep breath.... mounting a Zeiss with Leitax

I got a Carl Zeiss planar T* 50mm F1.7 C/Y mount cheap and bought a Pentax mount from Leitax. I could not remove one screw from the C/Y mount, and took the lens to my local photo/repair shop. No problem they said, but after a week they handed it back with the damn thing still in it. So I took a drill and drilled the head of the screw out myself. After that, mounting the Leitax was a piece of cake.

Note the one screw missing at the top right.

So far I am very impressed with it. Manual focus at F1.7 is shall we say an art, but when nailed, this baby is sharp wide open like nothing I have seen (yet).

Please take a look at this pic (It was F1.7, all photo's show F2.4 as exif info) at max magnification:

I am planning to do some "head to head" tests against the Pentax SMC 35mm F2 AL. Both are impressive in their own right. The Zeiss, as the 35/F2, has its own distinct characteristics, quite different from anything I shot with Pentax.

And heck, just doesn't she look great?

Yes, that is the beauty of Leitax, it's not an adapter but a proper PK-mount. It costs about the same as a good adapter, around €50.

I would drill and re-thread that mount point , it's unlikely the lens will sit square with one mount missing leading to de-centering type issue with image quality.

A re-thread is not needed. I drilled out the (head of the) screw from the old Contax/Yashica mount and replaced the whole thing with a pristine Pentax mount. The remaining base of the lens still has the original thread so the only thing I have to do is order a new screw (did that yesterday).

A comparison with my FA35/F2 coming soon.

The only problem I see with this story is that you used the words "Zeiss" and "cheap" in the same sentence.

Re: Take a drill and a deep breath.... mounting a Zeiss with Leitax

Hey, need some help. Is there a tutorial on how to get the screws drilled out? Any drilling kit/drill size you'd recommend.

I was trying to leitax mod the Zeiss 35-70 and stripped the screw head.

You only need to drill out what is left of the screwhead. I used a drill machine with the smallest drill I could find, about 1/2 the size of the screwhead. After removing the mount, I used pliers to turn the rest of the screw out.

Or, send it to David from Leitax, because the 35-70 is known to be difficult.

After all is done, you get a lens that is able to render wonderfull pics

Good luck!
