Canon PowerShot Sx30 IS Keep or Sell?

Hello,

I have a Canon Power Shot Sx30 IS. I bought it for a school project 3 years ago and now I just bought Panasonic GH2. I am interested in upgrading my photography in general especially video. Now I wonder if I should keep the Canon or sell/gift it. It takes nice stills and videos and has some features like miniature video and very high zoom.

Yet, two points I want to know: Is it worth it in matter of price to sell it and rather buy new lenses for the GH? And, more importantly, is it a valuable machine to keep given that it is not a DSLR nor a micro four thirds like my new one? So, I am interested to know from enthusiast and critics about these 2 points.  What/how are you doing with your Power Shots?

Thanks for your time

You don't specify which lenses you got with your Panny, so it's hard to advise - my decider in keeping older models is if they suit some conditions that the newer model doesn't.  SX30 clearly has a telephoto range and macro capabilities it will be expensive to replicate on your new camera and depending on your personal ambitions it could well be best to keep it until you have the complete kit for the new shooting platform you've adopted.  In fact, having it may help you decide how to select equipment for your new camera.

SX30 is the not the peak of the SX series by any means and is not a collector's item - it's solidly outperformed in many or most respects by the SX40 with the same zoom.  So I doubt you should either keep it or try to sell for a windfall on that basis.

I2k4, Thanks for your reply and advice. I like your criteria for keeping or not of old equipment. I will adopt it for sure. As to the lens, it is attached lens (not interchangeable). The specifics are: Canoon zoom lens 35X IS   4.3-150.5mm 1:2.7-5.8 USM.

Yes, I agree. It is good to keep until I have my complete kit but I too doubt that I will keep it after I do have a telephoto and micro, etc. It is only a fancy point and shoot, for that matter.

Thanks again

Just to be clear, I'm familiar with the SX30 specs and am keeping up with the SX series - your first post didn't indicate how much overlap there might be with what you bought with the Panasonic.  It sounds like you should keep the SX30 until you're comfortable your MFT system can cover the bases that are important to you.

I2K4, thank you for the recommendation. It actually helped me exactly in the way I needed. Comparing the features of both of course the GH3 (the one I ended up buying now) is much much better for still and video, but for now I cannot afford a telephoto or a backup camera that is pro. I am buying with it only a 14-45mm or 19 mm. So I will keep the canon power shot until I can afford a better backup camera and various lenses

Thanks again for the advice.
