Don't know as I only buy ballheads that have Arca compatible plates and plateholders. Much of my gear has RRS and other brand plates permenantly attached to the tripod mounts. Even my Clik Elite backpack has a Joby Ballhead X mounted onto its camera frame so I can swiftly attach one of my cameras/lenses with its attached Arca compatible plate quickly when I have the backpack flipped around to the front.

I don't think so. I think Manfrotto plates are hexagonal, gitzo are square? But don't take my word for it.

I also wouldn't get a non-arco-swiss compatible head. Maybe a head with traditional screw, and i'd fit a 3rd party quick release adaptor (RRS, novoflex, etc...)

Both should be square now. My Manfrotto 486(?) has a square plate.  I also have a Gitzo head, but it is a non quick release type.

It looks like that neither Manfrotto nor Gitzo heads are popular....

Manfrotto actually uses a number of different release plates that are not compatible with each other.

I use RC4 release plates for their stability and use both a ball head and a gear head compatible with those plates.

Arca-Swiss type plates do have a big advantage in wider compatiblity.

I had an older Manfrotto head that use Hexagonal plates and the one i use now is a Manfrotto 469RC Proball head have a rectangualr QR plate.

Gitzo plates are different.

My guess is:

The current Manfrotto plates with square or rectangular shapes will work for Gitzo heads.  But not the other way around.

Manfrotto plate holders are odd and specific..
