NX1000 v. GK120 v. wait

In summary, I like the capabilities of the NX1000 with better picture quality and lens flexibility, but the GC120 with Android is so much of a killer app for my needs that it is keeping me from pulling the trigger on either one.

Here's what I do:

I photograph cars for my website (edited due to advertising), in 4 main scenarios:

1. Photographing a car during a review: I control the whole scene, lighting, etc., no need for instant upload or sharing here. My current point and click typically does fine.

2. Photographing during an auto show: Scene and lighting is controlled by manufacturers and is almost always difficult to fight with. Instant upload via Dropbox or Picasa is desired for one of my writers to pick up the pictures to include in articles. Instant sharing on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ would be a huge plus.

3. Photographing during an auto show unveiling: Scene and lighting is controlled by manufacturers and I'm competing with 300 other photographers at the same time. Instant sharing via Facebook, Twitter, Google+ is critical. Instant upload to Dropbox and Picasa desired. This is a situation where I snap a shot an immediately post it to one of the social media sites.

4. Photographing during a car cruise: Almost always outside, but typically in late afternoon to evening lighting. Instant sharing via Facebook, Twitter, Google+ would be nice.

I have a wifi hot spot on my phone to give me the connectivity I need for these cameras, I would not buy a data plan for the GC120.

What I really really want is something along the lines of the NX1000 but running Android OS. Is there anything like that coming or should I just buy one of the current models? If I go with a current model, will the GC120 be of sufficient picture quality and will I regret not having the interchangeable lenses.?

No one?

Do you think the Galaxy camera would work sufficiently in the semi-pro situations I describe or should I go with the NX?

Is there any indication that there is a galaxy camera coming with interchangeable lenses or something at the NX level that runs android?

I must preface this by saying that I don't own the GC120.  However the lens and sensor of the GC120 is lifted almost straight from the WB850F.   I have a WB750 which has the same lens and is otherwise similar to the WB850F but lacking wi-fi.  I also have an NX10.

Since you only need web resolution, I am sure the GC120 will cope with well-lit situations but I have doubts about its suitability in poor light.  At least that would be the case with the WB750.

I bought mine because it is a true superzoom yet fits easily in a shirt pocket. The intention was to take it with me when i wouldn't otherwise bother carrying a camera.  The reality is that I never use it because I am unwilling to accept the compromise in image quality compared to the NX10.

It is fine in bright light.  The lens is amazing, covering almost any focal length required.  However in poor light, such as early morning or late afternoon, the iso ramps up and image quality deteriorates badly.  The flash is useless unless the subject is motionless because it only starts to charge when the shutter button is pressed.  By the time the flash charges and fires, anything moving has long gone.  I assume these characteristics carry over to the WB850F and GC120 so I would urge you to try out a GC120 before committing to buy.

Included below at web resolution are a few shots of cars and buildings taken on my first trip with the WB750.  These were all shot in glaring bright sunlight.  The vintage cars had stopped at Werris Creek, a small railway town I passed through.

Is there any indication that there is a galaxy camera coming with interchangeable lenses or something at the NX level that runs android?

Not yet.  I don't have inside knowledge but I reckon that is at least a year away, possibly two years, if ever.  The GC120 is just the first shot.  It will take a couple of iterations to get everything sorted before they even think about doing the same with more advanced cameras.  Of course it would be a great coup if they prove me wrong.

Whats the great need for android if you're already going to be taking your phone with you? At web resolution the camera sensor shouldn't make that much difference except in low light but I would think the flexibility of the NX1000 would be useful for the constant light changing conditions. There's also a portability aspect as the NX1000 is small but not super small (unless you get one of the pancakes but will that be the right focal legth). Do you have room to shoot on your shots? Generally the further back you can stand with a matched zoom gives a better perspective. I don't know the zoom-range on the Android camera but you may find it more useful than anything on the NX. Sorry no definite answers but I doubt anybody has the exact needs you do.

I'll preface this by saying I don't have either of the cameras you're considering.  But I do have an NX-11, which would perform in same ballpark perform as the the NX1000 you're looking at.  Here's some car pics to compare...

I own both cameras (each one € 299) - both are excellent.

NX1000 is mirrorless with 20 mpixel and I use it with 3 adapters and 30 lenses.

GC100 has a fantastic 4.8" display (1280x720) and 21x zoom, 16 mpixel

The need for android comes from this example. I was at the live reveal of the 2014 Corvette Stingray. I used my android phone to snap shots and upload them directly to my website's facebook page and twitter account real time, but the limitations of a cell phone camera restricted what I could really post.  Having to wait for pics to transfer to my phone from the camera and then post them is what I am trying to avoid. I want Shoot-Check-Post for situations like this.

As far as your other questions.. my room and distance are highly variable. For highly anticipated vehicles like the Corvette, I'm lucky to get any shot without someone standing in my frame.  For something like the Ram ProMaster van... I have all the distance and time I could ever want.

How is it in low light? Do you think it would perform better than the GK120? I'm now moving away from the Android requirements as I may have another solution there, though Wi-Fi is still needed.

Well bear in mind I haven't a shred of hard data to base any opinion on, so please take my thoughts with a large grain of salt ;-).  But gut-instinct tells me the NX-1000 you're considering should perform a few stops better in low-light, if for no other reason than an APS-C sensor should trump a 1 2/3" sensor.  And on top of that, a nice fast pancake lens (like the 30mm f/2) will definitely help the NX1000 in low-light as well.

I don't think Dxo has benchmarked the NX-1000 sensor (yet),  BUT they recently did the NX-200 (here ), which (on paper at least) should be somewhere in same ballpark as the NX-1000 you're looking at.  BTW, DxO weren't exactly thrilled about NX-200's low-light performance.  But relatively speaking, I'd still pick (any) NX over the Galaxy if low-light performance is a requirement.

Thoughts?

Re: NX1000 v. GK120 v. wait

So now that I'm making Android less important in my requirements, the NX1000 is currently the front runner.  I like the feel and size of this camera, but are there any other models, Samsung or not, that I should consider?  Ability to shoot well in less than ideal light conditions is now the primary requirement. Price doesn't really matter.

The nx200 has a better screen and build, but a comparable price, if you are not interested in wifi.

Yeah, Wifi is still a "want".  My workaround for not having Android involves having Wifi.

ugh.. and now I'm reading about the NX300
