A few shots from my recent trip to Colombia
2

My usual style is to bring too many lenses and not use any of them enough; this time I went with the K5 and 50-135 alone. I like the combo, but more than a few times I found my self wishing for something wider, especially in Cartagena's close quarters.

An interesting choice of lens - I've had to do with just the 50-135 when the 16-50 died on a trip, and it was an interesting challenge though not by choice.  The wide shots were all panos, of course, but that does not work with close subjects, movement, etc.  You did well with your kit - thanks for sharing the shots.

Thanks for posting. You certainly need something wider than 50mm for travel but I have had the same experience as you - taking a lot of clobber and not using it. My next trip kit will be 28mm and 100mm primes. Plus maybe 15mm.

Is there a security issue in Colombia?  I would love to go there.

Re: A few shots from my recent trip to Colombia

Thanks (everyone).  Security in Colombia is much improved, from what I hear.  I'm an anxious traveler in general, and I went with my wife and her family (parents, a family friend) to visit her sister who's been living and working in Medellin for the last 3 months.  Her family is much louder and attention grabbing than I would be traveling alone. That being said, the worst of it was an unpleasant dealing with a van driver who doubled his fee when we arrived at our destination and waited for his money in a calmly threatening way.  I think the most trouble you're likely to encounter as a tourist is petty theft; from that standpoint too the 50-135 was not an ideal choice.  But picture #5 (my favorite of the bunch too) was taken while boating down a river towards the beach near Tayrona National Park and I would have been reluctant to do that without weather sealing.

Overall, mostly pleasant people and some stunningly beautiful countryside, and of course some stunning poverty as well.
