nikon 1 + uwa 6.7-13 instead of uwa dx lens for my D5100 ??

Hi,

I am planning to buy a small and lightweight nikon 1 camera to complement my D5100 and was also thinking about getting a DX uwa lens.

I would like to know your opinions about the idea of buying a nikon 1 + uwa 6.7-13 instead of uwa dx lens for my D5100 ( advantahes, disadvantages, other options ? ) ??

Thanks in advance for your responses .

Marc

I use my V1 mainly with the 30-110 and can definitely recommend both of those. You would probably be getting the 10-30 kit lens too, which gets knocked a bit IQ-wise on the forum, but isn't really so bad considering how cheap it is.

Regarding the UWA, if you stick with Nikkors you will be paying more for that lens than for the respective body on both DX and CX, although there are also fair third party options on DX. I think the best advice is to start off with the two lens V1 kit (if you want the tele) and wait until the CX UWA is available and gets some reviews, before deciding about that.

I like ultrawides for travel so my vote goes for the CX 6.7-13.

My Tokina 12-24 has been looking/feeling like a monster lately.  (:

I recommend the Nikon 12-24 or 10-24 with your D5100.

The 12-24 or the 10-24 is not that heavy and will give far better image quality than the CX system.

Tokina 12-24 is actually VERY heavy compared to the Nikon version.

I have the Nikon 12-24 DX and I'm happy with it, but IMO it's not good advice to give to the OP to suggest that he buys an expensive lens for his D5100 before he has worked out for himself what Nikon 1 being a "complement" to DX means for him. That really only happens when you have started using the small system. Is your advice to the OP simply "Forget Nikon 1"?

I think it's all about preference.

For me, I've done the "far better" and find convenient good enough.

6.7-13 seems to be a sharp lens. See this thread.

At $500 a piece, it is about half the price of 12-24 f4 DX ($1199 at Amazon).

I've sold off most of my DSLR gears so it is a no brainer for me.

I had used the Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED on my D7000 as a UWA lens - It is useful for the cityscape, mostly in Europe with the old & small streets. Mounted on the Nikon V1 with FT1 adapter, it works mostly like the lens kit N1 Nikkor VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6.

- advantage: Usable on both DSLR DX & Nikon 1 bodies.

- disadvantage: more weight than the light N1 UWA Nikkor 6.7-13mm. Max. angle is 27mm (equivalent as the 35mm SLR camera) vs 18mm of the N1 Nikkor VR 6.7-13mm. Must have the FT1 mount adapter.

I did not take some photos to compare the Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED vs the lens kit N1 Nikkor VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 on the N1 V1 camera body cause of bad weather here, so I can't give you my opinion on the quality of these lenses.

About the N1 Nikkor VR 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6

- advantage: Lightweight and more wide angle than almost FX & DX UWA lenses. Discrete when taking photo with a smaller camera.

- disadvantage: Usable only on Nikon1 camera bodies.

I intend to buy an UWA lens for my N1 V1 to have more wide angle and lightweight to travel but waiting for the street price and may be having third party lens get in such as Tamron.

Francois.

Maybe I should use 10-24 f3.5-4.5 DX for price comparison.

10-24 DX is about $850 a piece.

I recommend the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for your D5100. We don't know how the 6.7-13 will prove to be, but I own and use the Sigma 10-20mm on my D7000 and find it has excellent optical qualities, good build quality and is less costly, lighter, and smaller than alternative UWA lenses.

Some sample photos shot with the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM:

Indeed , also for me the UWA CX or DX  is meant mostly for travel, where weight and size of a Dx camera body + lens(es) can be annoying IMO !

I already tried the 10-24 mm in the camerashop, and indeed its weight is acceptable. Also the 24 mm is interesting because it allows to take the 10-24 as only lens ( reducing weight ) when hiking and combined with the 35 mm f1.8 and 55-200 VR offers a low weight solution ( a la KR ). The only disadvantage of the nikon 10-24 is its price IMO.

I hope the CX UWA lens will come in "kit solution" with the Nikon 1 camera bodies. This should reduce its cost.

Marc,

I'm afraid that an N1 UWA kit is a forlorn hope, since the announced price of the lens alone is $500 (That is supposed to be a frownie). However, it does have VR, and I expect it to test well!

The main thing to watch out for with a UWA is flare (you will often have the sun in or near the edges of the frame) - I believe all the DX UWAs are OK for sharpness.

Good luck with whatever you decide on (no need to hurry about that UWA - get your N1 first before the fire sales finish! ).

Hi,

You are probably right ... but in any case, the price of the lens should become lower after the introduction of the lens. Anyway, I will wait untill the next Nikon cashback action to eventually step into the Nikon 1 CX world !!

"Hiking" combinations with zoom lenses to consider IMO:

1) lightest as possible : Nikon 1 + CX lens(es), but lens changing maybe necessary ( maybe this is acceptable with the smaller CX lenses ?  ).

2) light : nikon 1 + CX UWA + D5100 + Dx lens 18-55 VR/16-85Vr/18-105VR ( this is a solution that does prevent lens changing while hiking, what I prefer ).

The Nikon DX 10-24 is very good for this I read in the reviews. We will have to wait the reviews of the CX UWA to know how this lens behaves ...  I will take this into account when making the final decision !
