Canon Rebel EOS Digital Wont Turn On

I have a Canon EOS Rebel Digital and it won't turn on. I've replaced the battery, cleaned the metal parts of the battery ad it won't turn on. When it first stopped turning, when I would click the the one switch the little light on the bottom right would flicker, it doesn't do that anymore. I'm a college student who doesn't want to pay $200 + dollars to get a simple fix but I don't know what to do to fix it! HELPPPP

Re: Canon Rebel EOS Digital Wont Turn On

I did a quick search and the suggestions range from removing the memory card or removing the battery and letting the camera sit idle for 15 minutes. Also, try connecting it with the USB cable to your computer.

The other comments on this problem I read indicate that it might be a motherboard problem inside the camera, though, which would be covered under your warranty if it's still in force.

Really old?

At least really old in digital terms? Does it just say Rebel without an extra letters like Rebel XT or Rebel T1i?

If it is an original Rebel, it certainly is not worth fixing.

Years ago I had a similar problem with a Rebel XT, but the camera was new and the repair was under warranty. If yiour camera is a Rebel XT, it is not worth fixing either.

Could also try removing the lens. Occasionally my 350D would play dead when I was using my EF90-300mm but the camera would come to life if I removed and then reattached the lens. Never had this effect with any other lenses though.

When you say 'replaced the battery' do you mean used a different battery or removed and reinserted the same battery? I am wondering because if it's the same battery, perhaps it is the battery that's failed and it is no longer holding any charge at all.

Re: Canon Rebel EOS Digital Wont Turn On

I have had this with a 350D (Rebel XT) and it was due to a problem with the main battery compartment door.

If you open the door, with the hinge at the top, you will see at the bottom left corner a very small lever in a hole. When the door closes there is a button in the corner of the door that pushes this lever. I assume the purpose is to tell the camera the door is closed and to allow it to power up. You can test this by pushing the lever to the left with the door open, and hopefully you will find the camera powers up. (I'm assuming your battery is OK etc.). I used a small jewellers screwdriver to do this, but anything small and pointy should work!

If the red power light come on - you are 90% of the way to now fixing it!

Now, the fix -  I have placed a small folded piece of paper to the right of the lever (and leave it there permanently), this then helps the lever get pushed to the left when the door closes. I have not patented the folded scrap of paper trick - you may also want to try a piece of plastic.

I'm not sure why this has originally failed - but I've been using this with the bit of paper stuffed in it for over a year and it consistently works OK.

However, if the camera explodes and/or self-destructs (and I have no evidence it will) - don't blame me,

Good luck

Re: Canon Rebel EOS Digital Wont Turn On

If the camera is the original EOS Digital Rebel then it could well be 8-9 years old.

It would be well worth replacing both the main battery pack (BP-511) and also the clock/date battery (CR2016). It is possible this backup battery has expired and gone short circuit which could prevent the camera stating up.

Location and replacement procedure for the CR2016 is shown on page 33 of the manual.

Re: Did that fix your camera?

Hello! I'm in the same boat as the OP and this did not fix my camera :/

I'm not sure what's wrong with it now, I have two canon batteries and neither are working to power the camera and I just installed a new clock battery and that didn't make the camera turn on

I have a Canon rebel xti that is 8 years old and it was working the day before it stopped turning on, I didn't drop it or anything it just stopped working

I tried the little microswitch thing, leaving it then putting a new battery in turning it off and on etc.

Does anyone else have any ideas of what it could be? :/

Re: Did that fix your camera?

My 2005 Rebel XT has started going blank usually after swapping the rechargeable battery. Taking both batteries out for an extended period has so far revived the camera necessitating the time / date being re-entered. If I had to guess I would suspect one of the capacitors is starting to go bad and expect the problem to get worse with age. Even if the circuit assembly is available I would guess it is priced high enough to make it uneconomic to repair even if you can find a repair shop. Although I have a hate for Canon not updating drivers and making their photo suites hard to reinstall on a new PC, I guess Ill have to think about replacing it and bite the bullet on their bad customer support.
