Re: Wood duck..

That's a beauty.  Rarely I'm able to take one as nice in sunshine (since I live in a cloudy region where I often see them in winter).  But I'm always on the lookout for wood ducks.  I was glad to see your photo.

Nice wood duck you got. We have a few of them here but I was never able to capture the full body, they always hide behind bushes every time I went out look for them.

Yeah, wood ducks are usually tough here as well. This guy wasn't skittish. I keep a bag of bread nearby. That, and the water almost completely freezes over this time of year. It gets wicked cold, the cold keeps the kids, tourists and joggers away. There's always one place that doesn't freeze. Almost every bird goes there, it's easy shooting.

Here's my Virginia Lake office. Stool, camera, bag of bread, mp3 player. You can see the birds all jammed up in this one little piece of unfrozen water. My car was 15 feet away, this is as good, and as easy, as it gets

Yep, the light needs to be perfect, and when it is they light up in the most beautiful neon colors. The light wasn't great on this guy, but he's the first wood duck I got out of the water.

Thanks for your nice words.

Cheers

Bohemian Waxwing

No Cedar Waxwings here in Switzerland. But when the winter is very cold in Siberia and Russia, Bohemian Waxwing move westward and sometimes reach Central Europe.

Because they almost never see humans in their natural habitat they are much less shy than most of the local species. You just have to be lucky enough to find some.

Images taken with 1DIV, F4 500L and 1.4xII.

Re: A few more from Africa

Last one is interesting Brian, it would be nice if the mail lion will in the frame, or cut him at all and recompose.

Washington Coast Snowy Owls

These were taken last winter, however I understand the Snowy Owls have returned to Damon State Park, Ocean Shores Washington.  They are amazingly tolerant of photographers.  It is well worth the effort.  Call the Ocean Shores Chamber of Commerce to verify the owls are still present.  All shots taken with a Canon 7D and Canon 500mm f4.

Thanks, your point is noted and cropping could indeed produce an interesting picture.

This shot didn't look like much on the camera but it turned out nice with a bit of work.

Pure magic

Absolutely stunning. Congratulations.

Those make me wish even more that March is already here, since we are going for two weeks to Namibia. I hope, my 7D and Sigma 120-300 f2.8 OS will help me to give a few great shots as well.

Fantastic, really. I just hope, you did not forget to watch them also without the camera

Thanks,

Christoph
