6D GPS and autonomy

Hi,

A GPS track done with a 6D GPS. 6D is configured to save one point each 5 seconds.

Be carefull, when you turn off the 6D, it continuing to save track ("GPS log" on top lcd screen). For a ~1 hour track, battery start from 68% to 65% so 1 hour = 3% of battery (even if 6D is turned off).

What do you think ?

Dies it only save in the .log format you posted, or also in the .gpx format?

Re: 6D GPS and autonomy

it seems that it's only on .log file. But the NMEA format is very easy to understand.

example :

$GPGGA,151350.000,4849.6762,N,00228.3038,E,1,06,1.9,2.0,M,,,,0000*04

$GPGGA = after the $ the name of the line type : GGA or RMC

151350.000 = 15hour13min50sec

4849.6762,N,00228.3038,E = 48°49.6762North    2°28.3038 East

1 = GPS fix

06 = number of satelites

1.9 = horizontal dilution of position (parameter giving the quality of GPS precision)

2.0,M = altitude in meters

0000*04 = Checksum

for more info : http://aprs.gids.nl/nmea/

very easy to use in a soft (geosetter, change .log in .nmea) or excel sheet.

I'd be leaving the GPS on all the time...as it happens, mine is the w version, so no GPS.  A blessing in disguise for me.

I have a problem with my battery, it does not last more than 100-150 shots (no GPS). Make sure you don't have the same problem, might not be the GPS.

Re: 6D GPS and autonomy

I left the GPS log on sunday and the battery was completely empty on monday evening.

Since then the GPS is off.

Re: 6D GPS and autonomy

slightly off topic but I notice your GPS log follows very very nicely along the road on the map..

Comparatively, I've tried logging 2 walks out on the streets of Hong Kong and the log is pretty much not useable. It might be because of the skyscrapers but if it is then it's pretty horrendous a feature. The only part possibly right is the part out in the open at Victoria Park. The rest I'm pretty sure didn't happen that way...

Can't comment on the battery atm as I haven't been paying attention to it. Around 300 shutter count of RAW+L with 2 days of GPS plus lots of playing around with the menu settings I think.

That's a shame, I guess they wanted something left for the 6DII to improve upon, namely the accuracy of the GPS system.

I did some tests myself and GPS+Log at 1m drains the battery at 1% per hour if the camera is not used.My Tamson lense drains it more..

Is the 15 sec refresh really needed? I think 1m is enough

Re: 6D GPS and autonomy

GPS signals are actually quite weak, it's no surprise that reception is poor between the tall buildings and hills of Hong Kong. Don't forget that reception from multiple satellites is required for a good position fix.
