the D90 is 620 grams body only.  the D600 is 760 grams body only.  very little difference in weight between the two.

what will be the difference in terms of weight will be the lenses.  larger image circle means a larger lens, which has more glass and thus weighs more.  they are usually built to higher standards too, adding to the weight.  you won't see FX DSLR lenses go down to the size of DX lenses unless there are serious reductions in specifications, which is a bad trade-off.

I think the D600 is just the right size for the lenses it will use.  one day we might see a full-frame in a D90-sized body (it isn't impossible) but it doesn't make too much sense to me.

I had a D80, updated to the d7000, and have held the D600. It's only slightly larger and heavier than either, which are close to D90. Have you tried it? And that's the way it should be otherwise most FF lenses would feel quite unbalanced with it.

There's a brill site for comparing camera sizes, though it only shows current/recent models.

Take a look at this:

http://camerasize.com/compare/#243,289

Have a play with the drop down menus to compare the physical size of a host of cameras.

Its clear that a major size reduction could be achieved going mirrorless, but other than that it could be a long wait for space saving technologies to get back to the size of a film slr. There is an F6 film camera on there, its interesting to see how that compares with a D700.

That's Pentax territory. Or at least that is what Pentax owners are hoping for....

Honestly? Are we really going to continue to hear this whining about a miniscule size difference?!

It's too bad we can't be saying Nikon 1 or Nikon 1 V2 instead.

Yes. The D600.

There won't be anything else for the foreseeable future.

I had try D600 and found it is very D90-ish feel in hand.

That is positive and negative. It depends on situation.

Mirror box/pentaprism issue

Unfortunately, the mirror box needs to be larger to allow for the larger mirror and pentaprism than an APS C DSLR like the D90, so that negates any idea of it being as small as the D90. The D600 is only 150gms heavier than the D90, so what's the big deal?

I agree, the body is not much bigger or heavier, but most FF lenses are pretty heavy. Anything smaller than a D600 gets unwieldy with some larger lenses like the 24-70 and most of the weight I carry around is FF glass.

One of the reasons I bought the 24-120. It does save a lot of weight compared to multiple lenses.

No. Nikon stopped making small 35mm size cameras in the 90's. Well, the FM3 is small, but it is basically the same FM design that begun in the 1970's. Every Nikon Automatic everything camera is large, heavy, and includes a grip. Some people love grips. I don't.

My FE is smaller than my wife's D5000. It has a bigger viewfinder and is made much much better. All controls are external and labelled, so that you never have to turn on the camera to see what shutter speed you are at, and since lenses that work with it are all Ai and pre-Ai class, you can see aperture right on the lens.

Nikon will never make another small SLR. Their current DSLR range is still massive in comparison to older film cameras. It's just how it goes. Auto everything needs bigger batteries, can't house as thin bodies because they want to throw everything in there - even things that most people will never use.

The day someone brings out a digital FE, I'm dropping my D800.

It's only when you don't really care about DOF equivalence. On an FX body, a small and light 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 gives roughly the same composition that requires a 17-70 f/2.8 lens on DX, usually large and heavy.
