SX40 video problem

I tried shooting video in my SX40 HS today, and showing it in a QuickTime player on my desktop computer. The results were not good. Here’s what happened:

  1. I open QuickTime and then open the .MOV file in it
  2. A still frame of the beginning appears on screen.
  3. I click the play button
  4. As the frame remains frozen, I get two seconds of audio, six seconds of no audio  . . .  two seconds of audio, six seconds of no audio  . . .  and on and on.
  5. Meanwhile, the time track marker jumps two seconds when the audio comes on and six seconds after the quiet periods, until the marker gets to the end of the time track. Then the frozen video on screen jumps to the last frame taken (also frozen) before going back to the frozen image of the first frame.

Any ideas as to what the system or I am doing wrong? Thank you!

If you've used this computer before for video from the SX40 and it worked OK before, I don't know why it wouldn't work this time, unless it just got corrupted when uploading it.

However, if this is the first time you've tried this computer, it may be that it is just too slow for the HD video from the SX40.  My newer Win7 computer at home  plays them just fine, but the older computers at work can't handle the HD stuff.  They just jump around like stop motion photography.

Don Trust has some good points, can you provide more information on your computer system.  What software are you using? I sure someone can provide more information to help you.  Have you made a video with the SX40 before?  I found the SX 40 and SX50 simple to shoot video with and had no problems with the cameras.  I sure when they receive your information they will be able to assist you.

Thanks guys. I think perhaps the problem is with the computer, as it has been slow doing about everything lately. I had shown videos on it before taken with an SX30 that worked fine, but that was more than a year ago. Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

I think you nailed it. I use Windows Media to display video taken with my SX40. Everything works perfectly on an 8 year old desktop computer with XP; and a 5 year old laptop with Vista. I haven't tried Quick Time for any videos, but I would expect similar results.

If you haven't already, consider updating to the latest version of Quick Time. Maybe even try a "Tune-up" program to clean-up the Registry, remove broken links, remove duplicate files, etc.. And then try viewing the video.

If you are running Windows you might try downloading and running Spybot - search and destroy from the CNET site.  I've had good luck with both and here is the link:

This might take care of your overall SLOW performance and solve the video problem too?
