D4 Firmware 1.03 Improvements?
1

Has anyone noticed any improvements in their D4 since installing the 1.03 update?  I'd swear mine is focusing faster and more accurately but it may just be wishful thinking.

Me too. I noticed it because focusing with my sigma 24mm 1.8 macro is much faster than before and it locks very quickly also in left and right af points. The lens hasn't a fast af itself but now it focus very very fast.

Re: D4 Firmware 1.03 Improvements?

My purely subjective impression is that my D4 does autofocus significantly better in very low light since I installed the new firmware.  It was really good before.  Now it seems that it can focus effortlessly on practically anything I can see through viewfinder.  This is noticeable in all modes including live view.

Re: D4 Firmware 1.03 Improvements?

You're describing my impressions exactly.

Also, not only does it focus faster, but it seems that the images are just plain sharper.  I don't need to add sharpness as much and it's much easier to over-sharpen than it was previously.

Re: D4 Firmware 1.03 Improvements?

Here's a Pileated Woodpecker I captured today just a little bit ago after I had updated my d4 firmware.  The first image is at full frame, second one is approximately at 100%.  No sharpning.  I took it in raw and converted to jpg.  See what you think?  To me it looks pretty darn good, but dpreviews conversion into this forum may not show it.

I do think the af has improved.

Likewise shot a low-light (ISO 8000) Theatre performance Friday night and doing the culling now, but there is very little to delete.  Any missed shots were all caused by me

Re: D4 Firmware 1.03 Improvements?

Here's a sample at 8000 ISO. I have >1,000 shots all well focussed, just a matter if I timed their expressions and gestures for a pleasing photo. I also use the D4 Quiet mode, so these are all single shot and I generally time my shooting with loud volume from the stage to minimize distraction.

D4 Focus was great throughout this performance

Since the image was captured in raw...  Unless Capture NX2 (or maybe ViewNX) was used to do the raw capture and jpeg conversion the Picture Control settings are irrelevant.

Yes I do use capture nx2 and view nx for processing.  My picture control was set on vivid, sharpening on 6 and contrast on +1.  As I said I did not extra sharpening in pp.

Toronto CN Tower, taken from my hotel room through a thick window at ISO 12800.  My camera quickly focused on the rails of the tower, and I don't think it would have done so before the firmware upgrade, at least not as easily.  I also agree with the comment about low light pictures needing less sharpening than before (I use LR).

Shot a series of corporate portraits with location studio yesterday, and did not notice any difference.

I'll take a closer look at the files today.

Re: D4 Firmware 1.03 Improvements?

I went on the NIKONUSA.com web page and it claims there is no firmware 1.03 upgrade.

Am I doing something wrong?

Is it available in the USA?  Where can I find it?  If I upgrade from a non-USA web page does it void warranty??

Any Ideas??

Thanks for any help or directions..

What about the green cast on the Lcd and the images?  Are their improvements here as well?

green cast on the LCD is not a problem for six months till now.

On the images I've never noticed anything about a green cast. They're perfectly balanced and with great dynamic range and toning shades.
