Zoom lens not behaving.

My NX1000 50-200 zoom lens delivers a lovely, enticing high magnification preview when I use the focus ring, only to pop back to 'zoomed out' view when left alone. What is the problem? Am I using the 'wrong' settings? Very frustrating for a new Camera/lens combination!

it sounds like you have the lens in manual focus and the focus assist set to magnify.

Re: Zoom lens not behaving.

I'll second that, I just checked on my nx200 and indeed I was able to reproduce your condition. I get to choose 5x or 8x magnification or Focus Assist in manual mode from within the menu settings. Even in Auto Focus mode, you can still take advantage of the manual focus ring and the magnification feature but you have to have the shutter button half pressed.

I think you are using DMF (direct manual focusing)?  If set to magnify in the menus, when you half press the shutter to focus it will attempt to focus, and you can override the autofocus by turning the focus ring.  When you stop focusing it should pop back out to the normal view.

I am confused by your post on what the actual issue is, it sounds like expected operation.  If you switch from autofocus to manual focus, and leave the magnify option on in the menus it should do the same whenever you turn the focus ring (not only when the shutter is half pressed).

Are you confusing zoom and focus rings?
1

Its not clear what you are trying to do here. I am sure you are aware that the zoom and focus rings  have completely different purposes. If you want to zoom in you have to use the zoom ring. The focus ring is there if you want to focus manually and the magnified view that you see is to help you in determining critical focus. This is why the magnified goes away once you are done focusing.

Also camera doesn't allow you to focus manually in regular AF mode, so if you are getting the magnified view then your camera must be set to either manual focus mode or DMF mode. You might want to make sure that it is not set to MF mode as the camera won't autofocus in that mode.

Re: Zoom lens not behaving.

As above your question has been answered, but I think the real query was like me , when you first got the ccamera and found this magnification you presumed the camera had a much longer zoom than it has.

i had the same thing with the 20-50 lens the preview picture was much larger than the photo you could take.

As I wanted to tha photo,s of  birds in my garden about  30-40 feet away I have just bought the 50-200 lens , I expected it to be able to take close up shots of the birds at  this short distance but it really doesn't at all.

Another problem I found with the lens was when I tried movie recording if you use the zoom at all , all you can hear on playback is the noise of the lens moving in and out.
