Thinking of buying the NX1000

Hi,

I am an amateur when it comes to photography but am very interested in buying the NX1000 with the 16mm pancake/20-50mm twin lens kit and the free Galaxy Tablet.

I wanted to ask what the NX1000 camera would compare to?

I have a Nikon D3100 but want something smaller to carry as an option.  Would the NX1000 be deemed a better camera than the D3100 DSLR with their respective kit lenses or is the NX1000 a worse camera but just smaller?

I understand alot comes down to the person who uses the camera but I am trying to decide whether to just save for a better DSLR or go the NX1000 route.

I understand that the NX1000 is essentially a nx210 in a plastic body.  The nx210 is £700.  Therefore would it be correct in saying that the NX1000 really competes with cameras in the £700 bracket rather than the likes of the Nikon 1 J2 or the Sony NEX F3?

Additionally, I will probably look to use the 16mm pancake lens as the lens of choice when going out e.g to parties etc.  I understand this is a wide angle lens and typically best used for landscapes (which I will indeed use the lens for) but can this pancake lens still take useful portrait based pics?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Thinking of buying the NX1000

nx1000 image quality is on a par with a d3100,

both those nx lens are very good. although portrait with a 16mm requires quite a bit of experience to not uglyify a subject. 30mm might be worth buying also.

nx1000/210 is good at iso1600 but very average at iso3200.

Would you say the nx210 is effectively the same camera as the nx1000?

If so why is the nx210 priced at £700.  Surely a silly amount for a camera comparable only to the D3100?

1) You can get the NX210 for $650 in the US.  I paid $500 canadian for my NX200.  I don't know who is ripping off the Brits or why

2) You can't put the D3100 in your pocket (unless you are a giant).  And FWIW, IQ is probably closer to D5100/D7000 than D3100.

Re: Thinking of buying the NX1000

also:

the NX210/20 have multiple control dials.  NX1000 has only one.  (If all your lenses are iFn, you might not care).  I wouldn't give up my two control dials.

NX210/20 have metal bodies.  NX1000 is plastic.

NX210/20 have high-res OLED displays.  NX1000 has VGA LCD screen.  I can usually manual focus by looking for the shimmer on my high-res OLED screen.  Poor man's focus peeking.

NX210/20 come with big 18-55 lens (with IS).  NX1000 comes with the smaller 20-50 lens (no IS).  The latter is  more useful IMHO, and I rarely use my 18-55.  Mostly for movies where IS is handy.

Its good little camera - love the built in wi-fi and the twin kit lens is good value, you can save more money by visiting Quidco.com and buy it from Jessops.

One word of warning they ran out of stock of the free galaxy tablet yesterday and today - they don't know when / if they get any more in stock.
