Here's a great, cheap, 100% waterproof case for G1X.......
4

Hi,

I just thought I'd share this.  There have been many G1X 'which camera case' threads, but I've not seen this solution from anyone else and I think it's a very good one - works for me...... Obviously it will also work for smaller cameras like the G12, etc.

I like to hike in remote areas with my cameras and sometimes that means tackling a day in the rain.  Sometimes even your pack can get wet in the interior.  Or you might be boating.....  I like to keep my camera in a waterproof case, but they aren't all suitable (depending on your gear).

I've found the brief case/clam-shell style Pelican cases and boxes work only if you can put them down on something to access their contents. They don't have a design which is purpose built to be worn over the shoulder and allow top access while hanging at waist level.

There is brand called Underwater Kinetics which is less well known but they do have a series of small top access boxes with strap lugs positioned to allow over the shoulder use.  I've found that the model 406 'Ultra Box' takes the G1X very neatly with a filter adapter, filter and 58mm DSLR lens cap.  It's very light and fully waterproof.  An additional advantage is that they are also much more bump and crush resistant than a fabric case.  Here's two photos below.  They are light and well made but inexpensive.  Black or safety yellow, with optional silicone rubber liner.  They can be found on-line or in outdoor and dive shops.  They come with a wrist strap, but I've replaced mine with a piece of 1" webbing from an outdoor shop to go over my shoulder.

Hope this is useful to someone.

Cheers, Rod

Re: Here's a great, cheap, 100% waterproof case for G1X.......

I've tried many, even bought a few but this looks the best to me. Thank you for showing it, but is this available in the U.S.? It kinda reminds me of the old "TUNDRA SEA KING" Cases. I have many large & medium but I never bought the small one, very similar to this. If anyone knows of the U.S. availability please let me know. It will be sought by many, I'm sure.

Many Thanks,

... Joe Prete

Question for RodMcD:  Does the box you picture have the removable padded liner?

If you scroll down the Amazon ad to "Product Description" you'll see it says the product has a 'removeable liner'

Here's another which has same stated dimensions although higher price.. but the liner does look diffeent if you view a blow-up pic where the inside shows a little better.

Re: Here's a great, cheap, 100% waterproof case for G1X.......

Hi Roberto,

Mine came with a corrugated soft synthetic rubber liner.  You can see this in the photos in my OP.  It can be removed to leave the hard plastic shell only on the inside.  I believe you may be able to order a pluck foam block at extra cost - perhaps check with a supplier, but that wouldn't work for the G1X because that model almost completely fills the box - there's no extra room and the rubber liner is perfect.

I've heard back from a few other people who've tried this box for the G1X that they found it a tight fit in the dimension from the back of the camera to the front of the lens cap.  After some discussion we narrowed this down to the specific filter adapter, filter and cap they were using.  Some adapters and some filters and some caps are fatter than others.  I'm using the Canon adapter, a thin Hoya protective filter and a 58mm Canon DSLR lens cap. This combination works fine and the G1X without any of the accessories fits very easily.

Another solution for making custom foam shock absorbing liners is to use closed cell foam.  Buy yourself a cheap thin camping sleeping mat made of the stuff and cut it up to fit whatever you're putting in the box.  It can be easily glued together with silicone rubber sealant of the kind used for guttering and roofing.

For anyone interested, the top-loading Model 609 Dry Box works very well for larger cameras like DSLRs.

Cheers, Rod

Thank you Rod, I should have waited a while for your reply. I have already ordered the box from Amazon at $29$ . It is the one with clear lid and foam padding which it seems I  will need to replace with the closed cell stuff. I have some scraps of the camping pad foam leftover from making a kayak seat.   Could have saved ten bucks and gotten the box you have.

I just recieved my box from Amazon. They sent me the ten dollar cheaper model with no padding and charged me for the expensive one with padding.  29$ purchase not worth fight them for the refund. I will not be ordering anything more from them though!

Amazon customer service is generally very good and is certainly not worth crossing amazon.com completely off your list of places to buy from.  That's a bit immature.  Call and tell them the wrong item was sent.  They should fix it.

Fully agree.. Amazon UK is great and fully reliable to deal with any problems at all.. same I understand with Amazon US - from my long-standing good friend in Georgia who has said for many years that he deals without a question and has done for years ..NOTHING to quibble about and he gets returns/exchanges without a question IF it becomes necessary.
Get them to send you the proper one and they will pay for return of the wrong one I'm quite sure... will I think maybe give you a returns label for the wrong package back to them.

I want to add that 8 years later you can still get an Underwater Kinetics 406 case from the manufacturer at https://www.uwkdive.com/products/ultrabox-406

Thanks for the recommendation—the G1X fits in perfectly.

Note there's a link on the above page that says "Buy on Amazon" but it takes you to a different product. I couldn't find the 406 case on Amazon, so I bought it from the link above.  They were a bit cagey about how soon I'd receive it, but I received it 10 days after my order.

Wow, it took you a while! I sold the G1x long ago, but I did speak with CS at Underwater Kinetics recently, and their current line including foam and Divider inserts are compatible with the older line called “Tundra Sea King” cases, of which I have several. They held up quite well over the years, but once “plucked” those foam inserts need to be replaced to fit new gear.

Thank you for the reply Tom!

All the U.S. Amazon links say " Currently unavailable.
We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."
Looked good for a minute there. There is a dive shop that has one, at three times the price ,before shipping.

Nice find Rob, and thanks for sharing.

I have, in turn, a few observations that may be of interest.

1) Two of the FAQs I recently published in R1 (below siggy) provide solutions for these issues, which I'm very familiar with, FAQ 25 (rig protection) and FAQ 28 (hiking or walking in rain and wind.) Here's the direct link:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66134348

2) This 406 is a "Pelican-type" case. It's just more of a vertical design. Many come from just a few Chinese factories that build to specs and sell in bulk to various main brands (they are usually made via injection molding which is easy even for small companies when the item is small, but gets very tricky when you get to larger sizes.) This one uses a bit higher-end parts such as stainless steel and nice handles. I own a few such enclosures and they do a good job at protecting from heavy shocks and moisture. I also use one as a food box on some hikes in bear or cougar country because it prevents the smells from escaping.

3) I'm lucky to have a G1X3 which has superb WR, allowing me to simply use FAQ 28 option 3 when it really pours. The only times I stick it inside a waterproof box or sack is in dangerous stream crossings or boating.

4) The reason why your UK 406 feels light is that it's small. Otherwise this material is actually quite heavy.

5) Cool cam strap you made there!

BTW, if you ever wanted to hike hands-free with this case and a backpack, you could easily rig a couple of short quick-attach straps to lash it to your pack's shoulder straps, or a longer one, similar to the one you made but with a couple quick-release buckles, that would run up one strap, around the pack (usually underneath the lid) and back down the other strap. Both options give you easy chest-level access to your cam.

Anyhow, just a few thoughts.
