That's why I bought this lens. The combo is perfect : silent, compact, sharp wide open. Mostly around 2000 ISO, Raw - LR 4.2 processed

The new way of taking picture.

Love those shots.

The saxophone is a very interesting machine, but I'm more interested in music.

Very nice photos indeed showing again that the OMD is a very capable camera in the hands of a good photographer.

On the other hand, I'm not very sure about the 75mm 1.8. It is a fantastic lens but it's limited FOV and lack of versatility, makes it far from being the perfect lens for shooting musical events. at least for me.

There is no perfect lens for musical events because there are so many different situations and variables but generally speaking, if I have to choose one lens only to shoot a musical event with my OMD, it will always be the Panasonic  35-100 f2.8.

Cheers

I agree that the 35-100 is the best choice for one lens.  But if you can have three lenses, then the 20, 45, and 75 give you ample FOV coverage and 1.3 stops more light.

thanks for your comments. I agree with the 35-100 f:2.8 (in the past I used the Canon L 70-200 f:2.8 for such events). Only a choice I made to avoid zooms and go to fixed lens when switching to m43

One of the downside of the Zuiko is that the red dot for the mounting is not embossed, making the lens changing more difficult. When I swapped for the pana 25 f:1.4, the embossed red dot helped a lot.

An f2.8 lens, particularly on m43 where cameras don't excel at high ISOs, is not the best choice.  On a FF DSLR like a D4/D800, a 70-200 2.8 is a decent choice, a fast 85 1.4 or 135 f2 is even better.  Depending on the lighting in the venue, lens speed may make all the difference in the world.

The difference between 200 mm and 150 mm is not that significant. The faster max aperture of the Olympus 75 is.

Enjoyed the series of images.

They all seem to be....

a bit underexposed. Also, sometimes your shutter speed (e.g. 1/60) was a bit too slow.  Most theatrical shooting needs to be done at ISO 3200 to get the shutter speeds and exposure needed.    Tedolph

I'd play with the exposure and lighten up the musicians more. I wouldn't call the images underexposed because you exposed to save highlights. However, I think more work needs to be done on the exposure in PP.

Also you chose a weird shutter speed. It’s too slow to deliver sharp images, too fast to convey energy or motion. Pictures just seem slightly blurry.

Nice work though. I've done a lot of concert work; it ain’t easy.

Phenomenal shots.  Please quit showing us what the 75 1.8 can do, or I will soon be in the doghouse from buying one.

In theory this is true. Practically when I am shooting a musical event, I have no time to change lenses. According to my experience, an f2.8 lens such as the 35-70, is fast enough for most of my concert needs so I am very happy to give up the 1.3 extra stop of the primes in order to gain the versatility and the flexibility that the only a zoom lens can provide.

Cheers
